Background & Influences
Raul originally intended to follow his brother into a career in horse training and show jumping. He was an accomplished show jumper before he became interested in auto racing as a profession.
Raul had to be a little creative in order to convince his family that he should race cars. He went on strike. Raul stated in a 1991 Jaguar press release, "I did not speak to anyone, not my father, my mother, anybody. I would sit at the kitchen table and there would be no conversation. Then suddenly, I'd make a noise like a motorcar. I guess they saw that I really wanted that go-kart, that I was committed to it. And I finally got it."
Raul speaks four languages in addition to his native Portuguese: English, French, Spanish and Italian.
In 1987, the Autodromo Internacional de Pinhais, located in Raul's hometown of Curitiba, was renamed Circuito Raul Boesel in his honor.
Raul cites Niki Lauda as the greatest influence on his life.
In an interview with Inside Cart in 1997, Raul stated that
he was impressed with the fact that Lauda returned to Formula 1 despite being severely injured in an accident. Raul said that some individuals felt that Lauda returned to auto racing for financial gain. Raul felt that he returned simply because of his great love of the sport.
