History Renault 21 / 21 Nevada

The Renault 21 sedan was introduced in the beginning of 1986 as the successor of the R18. A few months later the Nevada followed, the break version of the R21.

The R21 is one of the very few cars to have had 4 different wheelbases. The 1.7 petrol and 1.9 diesel engines (F series) where placed transversally, while the 2.0 and 2.2 petrol and 2.1 diesel engines (J series) where placed longitudinally. The latter versions therefore had a 6 cm shorter wheelbase. The wheelbase of the Nevade was again 15 cm longer than of the sedan model.
(2,60 m for the 1.7/1.9 sedan, 2,81 for the Nevada, 2,66 for the 2.0/2.1/2.2 and 2,75 for the Nevada).
If you also look at the 4x4 version, the 21 had six different wheelbases, because the 4x4's had a wheelbase that was a few millimeters smaller than the front wheel driven models.

In 1989 car was face lifted. The front changed, so it looked more like the - face lifted - R25, and the rear of the sedan was changed. The cars got a new dashboard, and the overall quality was much improved. A new version was introduced also, the hatchback. This version was soon the most popular version in France. In 1991-92 the modelnames changed. In France the least equipped version was called Prima, then the Manager, and the Alizé. In 93 the Manager was replaced by the Symphonie. The names were still followed by TL, GTS, GTX, to indicate the engine. In the Netherlands the names were Europa, Symphonie (Sedan and Hatchback) and Manager (Nevada). The TXI kept the same name. Since modelyear 1993, the break was just called Nevada instead of 21 Nevada, and in 1994, they were called RN, RT, and RTi

In the beginning of 1994 the end for the R21 sedan and hatchback had come, with the introduction of the Laguna. The hatchback Diesel version stayed available for a little while until the Laguna Diesel was introduced in september 1994. The Nevada continued to be made until end 1995, when the Laguna Nevada was introduced.

The R21 was still made for a few years in Argentinia, where production had started in 1993.

The R21 was also sold in North America as the Medallion, equipped with a 2.2 litre engine. Just when the car was introduced in 1987, Renault sold it's American business to Chrysler. Chrysler continued to sell the car, under the name Eagle Medallion. In 1989 sales ended.
