Identification Renault 21

The type names

All R21 are have a type number

      K48E 05

The first character stands for the type of body:

K = Nevada
L = Sedan
B = Hatchback
S = Société

The second and third character indicate the model:

48 = Renault 21

The fourth character indicates the engine version:

E.g. E = 1.7 with multipoint injection

The fifth digit is 0 for normal models for 5 passengers, and F for Nevada Familiale 7-persons.

The sixth digit indicates the gearbox:
1 = 3 speed automatic
2 = 4 speed automatic
4 = 4 speed manual
5 = 5 speed manual

According to European Directive 76/114/EC:
  1. The VIN code. This has 17 digits: the first three characters indicate Renault (VF1), the following six designate the model (e.g. K48E05), the last 8 number are a serial number (the chassisnumber)
  2. Maximum permitted mass
  3. Maximum combination mass
  4. Maximum mass on axle 1 (front axle)
  5. Maximum mass on axle 2 (rear axle)

The oval:

  1. The type number of the car (see above for explication).
  2. Particularities.
  3. Equipment number.
  4. Extra equipment.
  5. Build number.
  6. Paint number.
The rectangular and oval plates can be mounted separately or combined in one plate.
