MEET THE CAST!...
Rafe – Ben Twat
Twat was born in Plymouth, and in fact spent much of his early life in Devon before moving to America. His time in the West Country taught Ben a lot. “My time in Plymouth shaped the way I am today. It’s a great place full of inbreds”. Ben is famous for appearing in many films with close friend Damon Hill, whom he met while parking his bike in Sainsburys.
Ben thoroughly enjoyed working on Pear Harbour. When asked why he appeared in such a pile of shite, Ben replied, "I got to shag Laura Fishcake, result!".
Ben knew that it was important not to glamorise war, something which we discussed during our interview; "Yes, it was important not to make war seem glamorous and trivial. Thats why we employed lots of really good looking actors and set the conflict to the backdrop of the love-triangle".
Danny – Jake Hair
All American hero Jake was spotted by Barry Fry at a Peterborough United reserve match. Barry knew he had star potential, “To be honest he did stick out from the crowd slightly.” Despite his 20-room mansion, supermodel girlfriend and huge wages, Jake insists he is just an ordinary bloke. Recently he was voted ‘12th sexiest man to appear in a film about pears’ by trendy women’s magazine ‘Vagina!’.
Jake is something of a music fan, and has even appeared on 'At Dawn', the new album from country-rockers My Morning Jacket, playing steel drums on track 8. While this was not exactly taxing, it was still a hell of a lot harder than playing fuckwit Danny in Pear Harbour.
The Pear Harbour production team put all the actors through a strict boot camp training regime, something which really effected Jake. "Man, yeah, seeing a sweaty Laura Fishcakes in shorts and a sports bra really does things to a guy, I can tell you".
Evelyn – Laura Fishcake
Laura is the daughter of famous Liverpool manager Bill Shankly and irritating cockney Barbara Windsor. She is probably best known for her marriage to TV funnyman Mark Thomas. Laura often likes to air her outspoken views to anybody who will listen. “Well, every film I’ve ever been in is crap. Especially my last one. American’s are all shit as well. Everything in the entire world is rubbish”.
Despite being a Hollywood star, Laura is a family girl at heart, and recently gave birth to a child, Tricity. "Looking after my child is the most important thing in my life" she says, "I think its important for me to be there for Tricity as she grows up, thats why I make sure I see her every 3 months". As well as being a great mother, Laura is also a devoted wife. "Meeting Mark was the best thing that happened to me, he saved me. I can see us being married for at least two years".
Laura didnt have the easiest childhood, and dropped out of Essex university to concentrate on acting. "I dont need a fucking piece of paper to prove that I'm clever" she snaps, "Although chosing to appear in 'Pear Harbour' does make one look quite foolish"
Red – Jimmy McFish
Glasgow lad Jimmy took up acting after being chucked out of the band Teenage Fanclub. The bitter split angered the Scotsman, "I wrote all of Bandwagonesque. I forsaw grunge for fuck sake, and how do they reward me? By chucking me out! I suppose appearing in Pear Harbour has proved them wrong"
It took a while for McFish to get over this but he bounced back in spectacular style with the sublime British film ‘Gotcha’ alongside Kathy Burke and Jack Davenport. Rumours were rife that Jimmy and Jack were having a passionate love affair, and you can tell from talking to McFish that his feelings for Jack still burn inside. “I don’t want to talk about it. What Jack and me do is up to us. We’re adults, and we can’t help the way we feel about each other”. Jimmy runs a small company exporting authentic Scottish jam to Thailand and is the manager of Hip Hop duo Rae and Christian.
Earl – Tom Sizemore
Tom was No. 2 on the Al Quaida death list after being mistaken for an actual American army general. Thankfully this was resolved and he is now No. 267, twelve places behind Les Dennis. Believe it or not, Sizemore actually invented the channel 4 game show Big Brother after being inspired by the book ‘The Hungry Hair’.
Dorie – Casey Blackman
Casey was drawn to the part of Dorie because of the complex racial tensions between his character and the others. “I wanted to try and express the frustrations of being a black man in the early 20th century, when racism hadn’t been invented”. Mancunian thugs Oasis wrote a song about Casey entitled ‘Fish liqueur’ which was unfortunately never released.
Recently Dorie met his agent for the first time, and discovered he was infact a blind hedgehog. "I was absolutely furious that I was kept in the dark for so long, but to be honest it explained a lot" Blackman was quoted as saying.
Betty - James Tarbuck
Despite her name, Tarbuck is in fact a woman. The 22 year old was seeing ex Blue Peter presenter Richard Bacon before his astonishing announcement last year. Acting may have made James rich, but she has made most of her money from writing the lyrics to The Stone Roses song ‘Going Down’, which was written about her love of Derby County FC. Tarbuck, Nottingham Forest fan Fishcakes and Leicester supporter Sizemore regularly used to have fights over who are the best team in the East Midlands, which often escalated into mindless violence and, on one occasion, the death of a cameraman.
Even after the massive success of Pear Harbour, James continues to write and perform songs. Recently she opened for Primal Scream on their US tour, and rumours of a relationship with bassist Mani were rife, but Tarbuck has played these down.
Pilot #2 – Ben Farry
Most people agreed that Australian Ben Farry deserved an Oscar for his superb performance as Pilot #2. Farry worked with Kevin Poole when he played Zeljko Kalac in Stay Down Palace, a role that saw him voted in the ‘Top 50 most promising actors in Swindon’. Ben is married to long term girlfriend Cathy and has two children Barry and Gary.
Score by Big Cabbage
Kevin Poole has long been a fan of Keighly band Big Cabbage and was delighted they could make a contribution to Pear Harbour, “I always thought their sound was very cinematic” he said. The bands debut single ‘Ian Hart or Ian Harte’ is played during the opening credits and ‘Placenta Picnic’ can be heard during the battle sequence.
Big Cabbage formed in 1997 and continue a great Yorkshire tradition of being shit, following in the footsteps of The Music and Spacehog. Their unique blend of 18th century classical music and Krautrock earned them praise from all in the music business. Watch out for their new album 'Hairy Axe Wound', which hits the shelves soon.
Executive producer – Paul Hudson
Paul first became involved in Pear Harbour when Barry Fry mentioned the film to him during the premier of ‘A Knights Tale’. The two were introduced by mutual friend Paul Bettany, and Hudson was thrilled by the idea of Pear Harbour, “I just knew this film was going to be brilliant, Barry totally sold it to me. I told him that I would do anything to help him with Pear Harbour”. Paul’s job as executive producer were vastly different to that of weatherman on Look North, but after a few difficulties, he quickly settled in to life on set.
Still photography – Phil Ward
Photography A Level student Phil Ward took many fantastic shots of Pear Harbour, unfortunately he left the light on while developing the film. It was a shame as there were lots of shots of Laura Fishcake in compromising positions with a goat.
Runners - Jack Dixon and Katie Parish
These two got involved with Pear Harbour after Jack was recommended to Kevin Poole by mutual friend Antonio Banderas. Unfortunately Parish was sacked after conducting a torrid affair with Ben Twat, leaving Dixon to cope with sandwich making duties on his own. He subsequently won a BAFTA for 'best sandwiches in a supporting role'.
