According to the project parameters, we were required to design a product with a minimum of 5 parts. After brainstorming a number of Ideas for a product to manufacture, we all quickly agreed on the idea of cycle tire pump. We modeled our pump from a simple tire pump we bought at the local sporting goods store. Because we used the actual gasket from the purchased pump, it would determine main design of our product. Determining other design factors, problem solving, and design changes would be our challange when going from prototype to final product design. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The function of the gasket is to create a seal to blow air out through the vent. It must also let air pass by when the piston is retracted. This is because of the small bumps on the inside of the gasket. When being pushed forward, the gasket creates a seal aginst the smooth piston surface and the cylinder wall. The pistons two main functions. It guides the piston back and forth in the cylinder and it is an attaching point for the handle. Originally we hade the idea of having the piston and handle be one piece. We decided that a seperate handle would be better for two reasons. It would help us reach the five part minnimum requiement. make an obvious choice for a part to be machined in the cell, another project requirement. The gasket tab at the bottom of the piston was taken directly from the desing of the purchased pump. It was decided that the piston would solid all the way through. Unlike the purchased pump, which had a thin metal rod attached to a plastic piece resembling the bottom of ours. With this design in the works, it would make it difficult to have a cap as a piston stop. A stop was nessacary to prevent the piston from comming out of the cylinder while pumping. Many ideas were tossed around. The group decided on a clip pin. The slot in the side of the piston would guide along the pin until and prevent it from pulling out. We soon found pin was quite difficult to produce and found no suppliers to fill our needs. The clip pin was soon changed to a screw. A nice substitute which caused no major changes to the design. The function of the cylinder is to act as a pressurised air container, only allowing air to escape through the valve hole. The cylinder was quite simple to design. The inside diameter was determined by the gasket and the valve whole diameter by the tire valve. The original design had the valve hole directly at the bottom of the cylinder. The bottomed was then changed to having a 45 degree surface on which the valve hole is now located. |

The handle has an obvious function. It acts as an comfortable grip for the users hand. The bottom lip also overlaps the outside of the cylinder, offering hand protection. A general idea of the handle design wasin mind, but it wasn't until the CNC lathe was programed, that we had a final design. The Handle has an inside lip inside the handle for attachment to the piston.
