THE SNAIL | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
(Screw Fixture) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The snail is our magazine for the stop screws. Snail is a revolver magazine which holds seven screws. It is driven by an air cylinder controlled by the PLC. The function is repeatable and works in two steps. The first step releases the screw into the pick up position. This is the spot in which the Motoman will retrieve the screw. The second step releases the screw, allowing the Motoman to remove it from the magazine. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Parts The device is consists of the following parts: 1. Air cylinder 2. Sledge 3. Revolver magazine 4. Connecting rod 5. Stop tooth (enables the wheel to go in one direction only). Attached on the wheel connected to the connecting rod. Ground state In the ground state are the Snail loaded and the air pressure is not activated. The stop-screw is fixated in place by the sledge that holds it with spring force. |

Releasing state The Motoman has placed the tool into the Snail while it rotates. When in position, the Motoman sends an signal to the PLC that turns the air pressure on. This causes the sledge to release pressure on the screw, allowing the Motoman to leave the snail with the screw in tact. The cylinder also activates the revolver magazine with the connecting rod attached to the sledge, which makes it revolve 1/14 of one revolution. The distance between the screw holes is 1/7 of the circumference of the revolver. This is so the screw can leave the slot without the next screw following down on the screw leaving. |

Reload state When the Motoman has left with the screw, the PLC has a safety-timer before its releasing the pressure, this ensures that the Motoman is away from the snail before reneging air cylinder. Thereafter it turns the pressure off and a controlled leakage make the cylinder loosing pressure. The PLC waits a while so its sure that Snail is in an inactive mode and thereafter activates the pressure. This makes the sledge go back and the revolver magazine to move. The next screw in the magazine comes to the slot and falls down into place. Industrial mode The snail can be easily adapted to industrial use by adding a slot on top of the revolver. A bin above the slot would allow the revolver to continuously reload, therefore requiring minimal maintenance. |
