THE TOASTER
(Piston Magazine)
Drawn In Ideas 8
When first brainstorming how the piston magazine would be designed, many ideas passed by the table.  The biggest challange was to design a magazine that would position the piston, in the same position, every time.  This is very important for the alignment of the slot when the stop screw is attached.
Using the machined flats above the slot, as seen in the picture bellow, the original idea was to slide the piston along a horizonal surface with a presurized cylinder, using the flat to keep it from rolling.  We found this to be too inconsistant.  Trying to keep the magazine simple, the current design was born.  As seen in the diagram,  It consists of a machined slot in the bottom to clear the gasket tab, and walls.  The side walls are positioned close enough togather, with only enough room for piston to fit with the flats facing out.  this prevents the piston from rotating.  The magazine is positioned at a 25 degree angle with the third wall acting as a stop.  Two tabs are cut out in the stop position allowing the Motoman Robot easy access.  The name Toaster comes from the appearence as well as the sound it makes when a piston reaches the stop position.
