From the beginning is was thought that the cyllinders would be compleately preproduced, that is there would not be needed any manufacturing on them in the cell. That meant that all the cylinders would have a predrilled and tapped hole, when they were put into the fixture. Then the Motoman was supposed to screw in a screw into this hole. This screwing operation demands a very high accuracy on both the Motoman robot, but of course also on the Totem. This meant that the main assembly fixture was needed to be able to allways locate the pump in the exact same possition. The fixture also needed to be able to hold the pump during the Motoman screwing operation. So instead of using a mechanical locking mechanism, the pump was decided to be held in position by airpreassure. The pump is guided into place in the fixture by the sloped bottom of the cylinder. The fact that all the cylinders have the same bottomslope, is used by the fixture, which has a bottom that is formed with the same slope. This to be able to allways get the cylinder in the same position. After the cylinder is dropped into the Totem, it is locked into place with two plastic bars who are pulled back towards the pump and held there with airpreassure. In this way the pump is kept into the same place for the intire assembly operation. During the project it was discovered that it would be possible to drill and tap the cylinderhole in the cell. This meant that since the hole was manufactuered after the cylinder was locked into place in Totem, the screwing process became more accurate. This because the intire operation no longer was depending on how the Motoman dropped the cylinder in the Totem, just on where the Hitachi drilled the hole. It was possible to do this drilling operation in the cell, since the cylinder was fixed so hard that it did not move during the time the Hitachi robot was working. The best part of this new application was that the Totem did not need to be redesigned, which saved time. The new application made the cell less sensitive for small accuracy-errors and also the goal for an industriall solution for the cell was better accomplished. |
