"Camaro" Definition:
Whether you are brand new to Camaros or have been interested in them for as long as you can remember, you may not know what the word Camaro means. According to Chevrolet folklore, this question was brought up back when the Camaro was first introduced. What they told the press was that the word Camaro came from an "obscure 1935 French-to-English dictionary," and that it's meaning is "comrade, pal, or chum."
What a "Platform" is:
A platform is essentially the internal physical structure and drivetrain that a vehicle is based on. Since it's expensive to research, develop, and produce a new platform, manufacturers often use a single platform for multiple models to reduce overall production costs. The models that share a platform are virtually identical under their skins. What we see as separate models (that share a platform) are mainly the same vehicle but perhaps with different body panels, wheels, and so forth.
GM Platform Sharing and Naming:
Some examples of platform sharing between GM makes include the following: Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Firebird; Chevy Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire; Olds Alero and Pontiac Grand Am; Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix. Each platform has it's own internal company name. Just a sample of the internal GM platform names includes: F-body, J-body, W-body, and Y-body. There's the term F-body again - that's the internal GM name for the Camaro / Firebird platform.
Brief History of the F-body:
The cars of the F-body platform were introduced to the public in 1967. There have been four "generations" of the F-body. First-gen is 1967 to 1969; Second-gen is 1970 to 1981; Third-gen is 1982 to 1992; and Fourth-gen covers 1993 through the 2002 model year. GM has made no official announcement about whether or not the Camaro and Firebird will continue beyond that. Rumors have it that there may be a Fifth generation F-body, but that it will probably not be produced until 2004 or 2005.
