July 2nd: The Second Day of the Battle
Early on July 2, General Meade prepares for an attack and fine tunes his lines. In late afternoon, the general discovers that one of his inferiors, Sickles, has against Meade's will advanced to lower ground near Little Round Top, a hill on which the Union fortified. A high-ranking commander of the Confederates then proceeds to attack Sickles. The commander is named Longstreet. The Confederates make an attempt to take Culp's Hill around 6:00 PM, but it was not very organized and was defeated.
The Confederates discover later in the evening that Little Round Top (a hill on the Western line of the Union) is extremely weak, and the Union barely held their position! Meanwhile, the Confederacy attempts a large attack on the Union's west. However, it fails, with bad planning causing a lack of support.
Around midnight, things quiet down and the firefight is put out temporarily.
