This is quoted from The Timechart History of the Civil War (which is already credited on the main page.

"Meade, George Gordon--Born December 31, 1815, in Cadiz, Spain, the son of an American naval agent. Graduated West Point 1835 and commissioned in the artillery, saw immediate service in the Seminole War. Resigned due to ill health 1836 to work as a civil engineer, he rejoined for the Mexican War and was brevetted 1st lieutenant for his actions at Monterrey (September 1848). At the outbreak of the Civil War he was promoted brigadier general of Pennsylvania volunteers. Wounded furing the Seven Days (June 1862), he fought at Second Bull Run, Antietam (when he assumed command of I Corps after Hooker was wounded),General Meade and Fredericksburg, after which he received command of V Corps. Given command of the Army of the Potomac days before Gettysburg, he waged a masterly tactical defense making superb use of his ground, but failed to follow up the victory aggressively. Remained in command of the Army under Grant, though his role became effectively that of executive officer, he nevertheless played an important part in operations right up to Appomattox. After the war he served with fairness in the South, dying in Philadelphia, November 6, 1972 of pneumonia brought on by his wounds. Known as "Old Snapping Turtle" to his men for his fierce temper, he was tenacious and able, but overly cautious."
