Over the last five years, software piracy has dropped in the United States. When you illegally copy, distribute, or download software, you commit a crime called theft because you are stealing someone else's property. In the United States, you can be fined up to $150,000 fine for each program you have copied. Software piracy is illegal copying of programs. Copying software for a friend, buying software, or selling illegal copies to users is breaking the law. It is stealing. When you buy any type of computer software, you accept the manufacture's licensing agreement. There are limits to how you can use the software. Piracy is a crime that can affect national and international economies. If there was some way software piracy was reduced, experts say that 1 million new jobs would be created. -Dana Gonzales
