My initial encounter with Muluken Melesse was in 1983 G.C when I had the opportunity to perform in the well-known Dahlak band. As a young keyboardist it was a great honor to perform with the dynamic Muluken. He was a dedicated musician to his craft and band members. Muluken Melesse became an example that radiated optimism in the future of Ethiopian music. We all knew that Muluken was a man who was continually pushing the envelope in developing Ethiopian music at home and abroad. It was an inspiration to be surrounded by such a great musician who creatively fostered change within the stagnate industry.
As a singer Muluken Melesse understood melodies like no other singer. Maybe the fact that he had established himself as a drummer contributed to his dynamic interpretation of music. Regardless, Muluken Melesse had an innate gift and a good sense of understanding arrangements. Even his lyrics were a beautiful weaving of poetic imagery in words. Consequently, his performances where filled with so much passion and spirit. The power of his voice still evokes nostalgia into the souls of his audience.
In so many ways there is a lot to say about Muluken Melesse. However, an important fact is that he was a man who unequivocally changed the direction of Ethiopian music. Muluken was a man ahead of his times. Unfortunately due to his religious belief, Ethiopia lost an artist who had great vision and dedication for Ethiopian music. In spite of his religious obligation, Muluken innovation continues to transcend in Ethiopian Gospel music. Nonetheless , his sixteen-year departure from Ethiopian music has not repressed his wave of influence that continues to permeate to the new generation of singers. Our great admiration for this man is only a small testament of Muluken Melesse's influence.
