Science Fiction and Fantasy

That's "SF" (for "Science Fiction"), not "Sci-Fi" (shudder). If you're going to say "Sci-Fi", at least pronounce it right, with a long "i" in the first syllable and a short "i" in the second, as in the full phrase "Science Fiction". Or at least pronounce it "skiffy".

Definitions of Science Fiction and Fantasy. (Updated July 25, 2005)

Read Analog Science Fiction/Science Fact Magazine! http://www.analogsf.com
Barnes and Noble carries it in their magazine section, and the date of appearance of the next issue is given in the table of contents, although it would be nice if these dates could be posted on their website; I still couldn't find them there. (See commentary below).

On TV

Babylon 5: http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/; The Fan Club site "The Station" is now allocated to something else. Note that the DVD set for the second season is now (2003) available.
See my way-cool PC theme on my computer page.

Fantasy and SF: http://www.whoosh.org: "Xena, Warrior Princess", "Hercules: the Legendary Journeys", "Cleopatra 2525", "Jack of All Trades", and many others. Kevin Smith, who was Ares on XWP and HTLJ, has passed away: http://www.whoosh.org/issue74/mueller1.html, http://www.whoosh.org/issue67/rudnick67.html; "Send not to ask for whom the bell tolls, for it tolls for thee".

Comics
Here's a great Sword-and-Sorcery epic about some little Pogo-like creatures called "Bones" who become involved in an ancient struggle. It's called "Bone" - see http://www.boneville.com -- there's good comic relief in the story, ttoo. The 55-issue series, appearing at the rate of one issue per two months (roughly), finally wrapped up on June 9 2004; the first issue appeared in 1991. Trade paperbacks containing the reprinted back issues are available. This may be suitable kids' reading; I'd give it a PG rating for some violence -- people and other beings get stabbed or bit in some of the intense scenes.

Rising Stars, by JMS: a superhero tale tracing the lives of a population who received their powers while in the womb from a cosmic event over a small town
Midnight Nation, by JMS: a short (12-issue), eerie series. Great art, too.
JMS had a website called joescomics.com, but unfortunately it now seems to be defunct.
See http://www.topcow.com. Here's a fan site: http://www.jmscomics.com.

Comics by Phil Foglio: http://www.studiofoglio.com: "Buck Godot", "Girl Genius" and possibly others. "Buck Godot: Gallimaufry" was great, and packed with lots of delightful comedy (R-rated for sexual content (I would say that the minimum age level to read this should be 16). I would rate the violence at the PG level).

SF novels used to have a lot more ideas in them, per page, back in the 1940's and 50s when they averaged 120 pages, as opposed to today's 350-page epics...

Here's a list of Hugo Award - winning novels from 1946-2002 (posted May 23, 2004)

Filking - note: this is not R-rated! (not on my pages, anyway!) (updated July 12, 2005)

Magazines - commentary

Analog SF/SF (http://www.analogsf.com)
*As Arthur C. Clarke wrote in his book, Astounding Days, Astounding/Analog certainly seems to enjoy giving librarians and indexers headaches!
The book review column is posted on the website, and the covers of the books are shown (which is a feature that the paper magazine doesn't have).
