Necessities:

Bedding: The traditional wood chips work well. MOST bedding material from the pet shop are alright, but not cedar. Cedar bedding has oils that irritate hamster's noses, and fumes hurt them too.
Exercise Equipment: Although the running wheel is used a lot, I don't like it. Hamster feet fall into the space between the runes on the rim. Try to find a running wheel with a solid rim. Another alternative is a running ball. Some running balls come with a stand so it could be used inside the cage. Warning: the running ball on a stand sits high and might provide a way for your hamster to escape.
