Housing A Hamster
Cages
There's lots of commercial hamster cages out there. I like fish tanks(aquariums). They're easy to clean and they work. A ten gallon tank is alright for one hamster. Your pet would be happier in a bigger tank. I recommend the 30'' tanks. It's a bit more expensive and takes up more space, but you can put more toys in it and it's more fun. If you're a little kid, a big cage might be too heavy for you to clean by yourself. Ask ma or pa for help.
Cages from Habitrail are nice because you can add toys and tubes and stuff. The cons are that they're harder to clean and they require a large initial investment (like $40).
Remember when picking out a cage, make sure there's enough space for toys and for your pet to run around.
Another thing to consider is the chances of escape. Most Habitrail houses are very much escape proof. Fish tanks have to have secure top. Well, acutally the top just helps to keep things from getting into the cage, like flies and stuff. If you use a fish tank cage, make sure the hamster can't climb on some toy and bite his way through the top. If you decide to use a fish tank as a cage, you can make your own cage cover quite easily. Use some wood, fine metal netting from the hardware store, and small nails. Measure twice and cut once.
