When can I start volunteering?

You can volunteer at any time during the year.  The school is always open, except during exams or religious festivals.  Nabin can host a maximum of two volunteers at the same time.

How long can I volunteer for?

You can volunteer as long as you want - there is no minimum nor maximum time required.  The only restrictions may be imposed by your Visa.  Currently, most visitors can get a Visa for two months, extendable for another 3 months during a calendar year running from January to December.  Obviously, we encourage you to stay for a long time, for students benefit the most from volunteers they get to know and work with the longest.

How much money should I donate to the school?

Previous volunteers have donated anywhere from US$200 to US$500.  It's really up to you!

If this is a volunteer job, why should I donate any money?

It is a volunteer job, and your time and involvement will be always appreciated.  However, we are a non-profit school with a lot of improvements still to be made, striving to give an even better level of education to more students than we can right now.  Since we cannot achieve that through only students' fees, we count on your support.  We will provide you with FREE ROOM AND BOARD in exchange for your valuable efforts.  But unlike other volunteer organisations, we don't ask you to pay a high set monthly fee up-front.  We leave it up to you to decide.  And if you cannot donate, maybe a friend or relative can make a contribution for you.  Please click on "Make a Donation" on the top bar menu.

If English is not my first language, can I still teach at Nabin?

Yes.  Our regular teachers don't speak English as a first language.  If you understand the content of this website, you are probably fluent enough to teach English.  However, if grammar is not your strength, you can always teach English literature or other subjects.

Should I bring some school supplies from my own country?

If you are planning on buying these supplies yourself, we advise to buy them here in Nepal since everything is extremely cheap compared to prices in Western countries.  Kids really enjoy all kinds of board, video or outdoor games.  You should check with the school first in case you have some doubts whether you will be able to find in Nepal the same article sold in your country.

Can I combine teaching with my studies/research?

Teaching at Nabin is not a full-time job.  You will most likely have a lot of free time at hand, and definitely a chance to do independent studying or research.  If needed, we can provide you with all the information you might need for a specific assignment from your school involving work such as the type you would be doing at Nabin.  This also applies to helping you in filling out any application or grant form.

How far is the school from Kathmandu?

There are buses running every half hour that take you to the centre of Kathmandu.  The trip lasts about one hour.  Please click on "Around Duwakot" on the top bar menu for more information on the area.
