Palmistry originated in India over 4,500 years ago. It was part of a study called hast samudrika shastra, that is, ocean of knowledge, and deals greatly with the study of the hand. This study links the certain physical characteristics of the hand to human nature and destiny.
It was also originated in Ancient China as early as 3000 BC. It was called siang cheou at the time. The Chinese used it for psychological and health counseling through the hands and nails and prevented disease by taking precautions. Soon, it became a shintoistic practice.
