The harsh business environment that prevails in Galway at the moment is forcing
many businesses to look eastward in a bid to survive. The low import costs
experienced by companies in Dublin are attracting interest from all over Ireland
at the moment.
It was announced yesterday amidst much sadness that The Old Galway Bus Tour,
a staple in the city for years, has been forced to take such drastic cost cutting
measures. James Dineen, spokesman for the company said, "As of Monday we
will be running 70% of our Galway tours from Dublin. In the current climate such
cost cutting measures are unavoidable."
The tours will now depart from O'Connell Street every half hour. Patrons will be
treated to the usual delightful commentary on the history of various landmarks
around Galway city but will be asked to keep their eyes closed and use their
imaginations while aboard the bus.
Mr. Dineen also promised that a new 'deluxe' tour is being planned. This tour will take approximately five hours and will actually
visit the city of Galway. When it was put to Mr. Dineen that at least four of these hours would be spent travelling to Galway and
that this would surely increase costs he responded, "Ah yes but only for the customers. Ticket prices for the Galway tour will now
start at fifty euro. Although there is a fifteen per cent discount for the open top seating because of the likelihood that you'll be half
drowned by the time we get there."
Other Galway businesses and institutions planning to move are the Bamboo Takeaway and Galway City Council. The Dominick
Street located Chinese restaurant will relocate to Hong Kong where it will be known as the Ballymactayto takeaway, specialising
in curry chips and battered sausages. Meanwhile Galway City Council is considering Howth as its new home due to the fact that
none of the councillors can stand the sight of this fucking town anymore.
