SYNOPSIS:
A Covington and a Pappas meet at an Indigo Girls concert. The usual uber-counterparts revelations occur. Sort of. Just not quite in the way you expect. *phew* And this is a long review!

EWOK:
Bwahahaha. Okay, the "intimate strangers" line has sold me.

excerpt:
The theater was packed, except for the seat next to Erin's, which remained vacant until just before the lights went out. As the Indigo Girls took the stage amid wild cheering, a young woman clambered over several people and collapsed into the vacant seat. "Hi," she offered with a smile, ice-blue eyes raking over Erin's form with a devilish glint.

NANCY:
Oh baby, that's the kind of gig I wish *I* went to more often. This story starts off really well.

excerpt:
She was close enough to be sprayed by Amy Ray's spit.

NANCY:
Okay, my own undying adoration and respect for Amy Ray notwithstanding, that is a tad gross *g*.

EWOK:
A friend at college once said the most joyous experience of his life was being close enough to the stage at a Patti Smith concert to be sweated on. Gross, perhaps, but apparently a common aspiration.

NANCY:
Fair enough, I once had the same thought standing a metre away from Sheryl Crow...But sweating and spitting are two very different things!

excerpt:
"I'm just, well, I'm pretty shy. Don't feel bad, I always clam up like this." Her green eyes met Val's blue ones, and a jolt of understanding-or was that recognition?-passed between them.

Actually, now I'm thinking that perhaps the spit went via the lead from the electric guitar and what they're feeling is actually electrocution...

EWOK:
I don't know why you're surprised. Saliva always seems to be a component of these sorts of meetings in uberfic.

NANCY:
*grins madly*

Here's another bit:

excerpt:
A wild chorus of cheers greeted that line. Emily and Amy made no secret of the fact that they were both gay. Contrary to some speculation, they were not, and never had been, involved with each other. On stage, they were the perfect team, and the best of friends, but in their free time, they moved in different social circles.

Uberfic? Or Indigo Girls bio?

Anyway, I'd like to take a moment to explain seriously what I really like about this story. (Uh oh, I'm going into text analysis mode here)

I like how we have three different pop culture forms here, and the writer is using one form to explain how the other two relate and affect her as a person and (I assume) as a lesbian.

The author's voice perhaps impinges a little too much onto the story and the characters, but it seems to be an honest attempt at textual comparison. What I mean is, here we have a Xena fanfic explaining how the Indigo Girls and these television characters make the writer feel about herself. I think that works.

Taking that a step further, it especially works if you read the main story of how the Xena Scrolls have affected these characters' lives as an extended metaphor representing how pop culture forms have affected the writer's own life.

As much as there are other style issues here, and things that aren't really working, that in itself makes this attempt fairly unique and, for me, intriguing.

EWOK:
You're getting a little academic for these reviews, don't you think?

NANCY:
*pout*
But I've got BRAINS as well as devastating beauty!
*throws back luxurious blonde hair, glowers*

rating:
-------------
EWOK:
I feel like this should be an album review. 6.5.

NANCY:
But wouldn't it be a really cool concept for an album review? *g* I guess being an Indigo Girls fan is a must to appreciate this - especially the bits where familiarity with the song lyrics is so important. I score it 8.0!, and have to add that the last paragraph was brilliant.
