Stem Cells Rejuvenation
The desire to find "eternal youth" has been
in the mind of humanity for thousands of years, and whilst years and
centuries were passing, and epochs and generations were changing, the
fight against ageing had not brought any meaningful results.
Scientists had been investigating physiological ageing
for some time but were not yet able to separate and grow, under laboratory
conditions, stem cells, which had been extracted from embryos and placenta.
It appeared that the stem cells were very weak and in fact did not survive
extraction and subsequent injection into the target areas of the body.
A suitable "guide" had to be found but the problem was where
to search for it.
Very recently however, a major discovery has been made
in the discovery of cytokines – a family of regulators of cell
activity and growth. Cytokines facilitate the excretion of large amounts
of stem cells in the blood. They also assist in positioning the cells
at the target site and control the processes of reproduction, migration
and vitality. Cytokines effectively enable the body to generate its
own youth. They assist in cell regeneration. Under the influence of
cytokines, for example, there is parallel activation of fibroblast and
collagen synthesis, which are the "building blocks" of skin.
This means that the skin can rejuvenate itself independently; in a stable
way.
The efficiency of cytokines in
the rejuvenation of the body, and in the healing of skin damage was
demonstrated for the first time in the Julio Gabbiani laboratory of
Geneva University. Since the laboratory production of active cytokines,
they were used in Europe in cases of plastic surgery treatment of injuries
and in rejuvenation therapy. This method is still in a process of being developed and it is not currently available in UK.
