One of
the first of the third generation of United States battleships, commonly
referred to as "fast battleships" the NORTH CAROLINA offered
a balance between speed and firepower. Mounting nine 16-inch guns in
3 turrets and twenty 5-inch guns in 10 twin turrets, and capable of
28 knots, the NORTH CAROLINA distinguished herself in 50 battles. Earning
15 battle stars, she was the only battleship to participate in every
major naval offensive in the Pacific during World War Two.
During
the NORTH CAROLINA's annual living history weekend, Detachment members
comprise the Damage Control Department of the ship's Hull Division.
Our activities include providing educational talks on shipboard damage
control, interpretation of a repair locker and Damage Control Central,
and fire fighting demonstrations. As our involvement with the NORTH
CAROLINA grows we hope to demonstrate rigging of casualty control power,
shoring, and patching in the future.
