Thank you for expressing an interest in the Naval Historical Detachment (NAVHISDET).  We think you will find that the NAVHISDET is a unique in many ways. First, our historical focus is on the United States Navy during World War Two – a historical impression not often done. We have also done a few United States Coast Guard programs since the USCG was brought under the control of the Navy Department during the war, and the uniforms and equipments they used during WWII were so similar to those of the USN. But what makes our organization the most unique is the fact that our primary interpretive platform is a functioning WWII era Liberty Ship. Unlike the few other USN historical organizations in existence who work on permanently moored or grounded display vessels, we have the opportunity and privileged to work on a ship that still steams the open waters on a regular basis.

On the JOHN W. BROWN we portray members of the Naval Armed Guard – USN sailors assigned to man the guns placed on merchant vessels during the war. In addition to our work on the BROWN, some of our members have worked with other Navy Units portraying portray members of the Damage Control Division on the battleship U.S.S. NORTH CAROLINA, and members of a Naval Beach Battalion. We have also been involved in Coast Guard historical programs at the Fort McHenry National Park; ceremonies at the United States Navy Memorial in Washington, DC; and numerous small interpretive, educational, and commemorative events. In addition to our involvement in educational programs, we also provide labor to help with the upkeep of the JOHN W. BROWN. Members generally volunteer two or more days for these work parties that involve the same work that our WWII counter parts had to do – gun maintenance, paint chipping, house cleaning, painting, and general maintenance.

The experience of our members ranges from veteran historian/reenactors to rookies. Since our goal is education vs. reenacting battles, we consider ourselves historical interpreters vs. reenactors. We will point you in the right direction and help you learn; all we ask is that you bring a willing attitude.

As far as historical military impressions go, ours is one of the least expensive. The basic seabag issue  needed for an individual to function with us can be obtained for less than $500. We ask that you hold off on purchasing any items until you have had a chance to talk with one of our veteran members who will be assigned to you as a mentor. We strive to be as accurate as possible in our impressions and there is nothing more frustrating than buying incorrect items. A lot of our members have spare items for sale or to loan on a short-term basis until you can purchase your own gear.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Naval Historical Detachment, please fill out the attached application and return it along with a full-length photograph.  If you cannot provide these items electronically, send us an e-mail for mailing instructions If you have any further questions please e-mail us.
