CLASS 314 MULTIPLE UNITS

Sixteen class 314s were built at BREL York in 1979 for operation on the newly opened Argyle Line, the sets are a 3 car version the Class 313 and 315 multiple units operating in England. The units are gangwayed within sets having end emergency doors for tunnel working allowing them to travel through the tunnelled section between Dalmarnock and Anderston. The outside cars are the power vehicles with the middle having the pantograph.

In 1990 314203 was involved in the fatal Newton train crash with 303037. One carrige was a write off so this unit was reformed from a converted 507 carrige and the unit is still in use today. 314203 is also the only 314 to be named to date being called "European Union".

In 1999 the 314s were transferred from the Argyle Line to the Cathcart Circle, Displacing some of the 303s which went on to cover the Argyle line and any other breakdowns on other lines to increase reliability. The future of these units is in doubt at the moment with rumours going around that Scotrail intends to order more 334 type trains to replace them. But being one of the most reliable of Scotrails trains I dont see that happening yet. Although these trains are in need of an interior refit and have graffiti scrolled on the windows.

At Present 12 units (314203,204,205,206,208,209,210,211,212,214,215,216) are painted in SPT Carmine and Cream and the other 4 (314201,202,207,213) remaining in the Orange and Black Livery.
