  • Water bottle

  • Running shoes

In the interests of providing a safe training environment, the following is required for fighting practice:

  • In-step, shin, hand and forearm pads

  • Head protection (Juniors only)

  • Mouth guard

  • Groin/breast protectors.

TOURNAMENTS

Taking part in competitions and tournaments is an important part of Karate. Typically 3-6 tournaments are held each year in New Zealand with many more internationally.

There are two areas students may compete in; Kata (forms/patterns) and Full Contact.

  • Kata is a non-contact, solo event similar to a dance routine where multiple Karate techniques are performed in a pre determined sequence. There are 27 different Kata students will learn leading up to their black belt

  • Full Contact is no-holds-bared fighting between two opponents. Juniors wear protective equipment, Seniors wear only mouth guards, groin or breast protectors. Fighters are allowed to strike full contact to the body (specific rules apply).

Students are encouraged to take part in tournaments and in areas that suit them; all students are encouraged to compete, NO PRESSURE is put on a student to compete in an area they do not wish to.
