Why is the Mona Lisa Smiling?
There are moments in the life of a doctor of humanities when
she both comes to a new realisation that there is hope for true
education (originality, creativity, and thought, not merely
"credentials") ... and when she is slightly humbled to realise
what youngsters can create. As instructor Steve Feld explains: "Our site compares the theory of Dr. Lillian Schwartz and Rina de
Firenze,
author of Mystery of the Mona Lisa.
As head coach of a ThinkQuest team I can say that there are many
interactive learning opportunities for students to discover da Vinci and
listen to his music, create multilingual musical postcards in one of
sixteen languages, take an online quiz or create one.
Our site is accessible to the hearing impaired and is viewable with any
browser.
Our resource rich collaboration includes links to web-building resources
and deaf links and many curriculum resources contributed by teachers." The unique idea and superb application here would be
worthy of any web wizard - but it impressed me all the more to
know that teenagers created it!
The Star Course
Though this site
does fall somewhat short of the standard of design for receiving
this award, its extraordinary content merits special mention.
(Yes, even enough to forgive the "Is anyone there?" graphic on
the page that explains the Star Course itself.) The Star Course is a series of talks about Christianity, for those who wish to explore the faith and "make up their own minds." The sound, open, and original approach is excellent. The resources on this site go beyond this concept to present exceptional talks presented by the Bishop of London (the one about the Trinity is amongst the most superb theological writings I have ever seen); debates; resources on theology and science; and a delightful treatment of the clergymen presented in the works of Jane Austen. Also note the information about the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists, a colloquium studying the ethical and spiritual implications of technology. The Star Course site will be exceedingly worthwhile for any Christian, as well as anyone curious about truly solid Christian thought.
G.W.F. Albrecht
This is the site of a thinker - which readers should find interesting whether or not they agree with Mr Albrecht's positions. Amongst the topics are cosmology, metaphysics, mathematics, religion, and art.
The essays are bound to stir a thought or two in any mind!
Scheherazade's Little Bohemia on the Hinkson
This delightfully offbeat, thought-provoking site has a rare originality
and wit. 'Little Bohemia on the Hinkson celebrates the circuitous weirdness of
life, the joy of cheesy monster movies, the apparent futility of grad
school, the humor of history, the trials of owning an old house, odd
phenomena of various sorts, and the virtues of strong black coffee.'
inGeneas
Superb resource for tracing Canadian genealogy, including
free access to related databases.
Steen's Residence
This highly original, intriguing site treats of the history of Denmark.
Total Image
Original computer-generated art
Callahan's Saloon
The philosophy at Callahan's is "shared joy and pain", but you'll find much more of
the former. Poetry, chat, message boards, features, delightful humour, and more
make this "pub" a happy and relaxing interval for the WWW community.
The Lafay Gallery
Outstanding artwork by Regina Lafay.
Adopting from Korea - and afterwards
A Prospective Parent's Guide to Korean Adoption
Written from the perspective of Roberta Rosenberg, an adoptive parent, this comprehensive,
single-source site is designed to help guide parents step-by-step through the process of international/Korean adoption. The site is extremely thorough, with a high content of current, original information, as well as numerous links regarding adoption and related topics.
L'Age d'Or - the Age of the Sun King
Enjoy the richness of costumes, banquets, and music at this site. Nicole
provides a delightful baroque romp from the days of Louis XIV - and
valuable links for those who wish to explore the period's
history in depth. Highly original.
Virtual Museum of Political Art
Dr Horvath describes his site well: "The museum shows artworks of a private collection, as well in the style
of totalitarian art (e.g. Socialist Realism), as critical associations by
means of modern art (New Constructivism). In this way a discussion is
started with benefit for everyone, who is willing to learn from the past." This highly original, thought-provoking site - with an underlying idea that is excellent - is well worth a visit. (Bi-
lingual site - some sections in German only.)
The Vulcan I.D.I.C. Domain
This superb example of web wizardry will delight those who enjoy graphics and JAVA.I.D.I.C. is a rallying point for the aliens of Star Trek presently featuring six alien races including the Vulcans. Live long and prosper!
James Rizzi Museum of 3-D Constructions
This talented artist (from New York City's SoHo) presents not only his own work but various galleries, shops, and links related both to art and to the "Big Apple."
Weblight
Extremely creative site with various sections to explore! (In Portuguese)
Looking for Someone? Find Them Here
Here you'll find a "one stop place" for finding
persons, places and things, with a strong slant toward the adoption
triad, but good for anyone searching for anything.
Kimmy Smith's English I and II
Teacher lessons, student links for grammar and
literature study, parent links on Attention Deficit Disorder and Sudden
Infant Death, and a story which Kimmy wrote about a daughter who died of SIDS.
Changing the Paradigm, M.P. Christy's Web Site
Meet an outstanding graphic artist with a refreshing perspective.
Caps and Bells
From our own GeoCities Paris comes this original site
dedicated to foolery.
Realm of Love and Inspiration
The author describes the page as: "... a collection of
poems about life and love from my perspective. The purpose of the page
is to inspire others to cherish life and the people in it and see
positive and negative experiences as chances to learn and grow."
He isn't Spenser or Milton, but indeed writes from the heart.
Split Angels
Split Angels is a resource and support site for Dissociative Identity Disorder(DID) also known as Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD). For many of you, I'm sure, it will be your initial introduction to the topic, as it was for me, and, tragic though some of the details are, it is well worth a visit for the increase in awareness and understanding that it offers.
Klingon Imperial Diplomatic Corps
There certainly is no lack of originality or content here! You'll
find over 150 pages of Klingon culture. It is the first site
that I have reviewed that deals with a culture other than that
of planet earth - and the detail is out of this world. (Pardon me - I couldn't resist that last!)
Science for the Millennium
Online expo focusing chiefly on astronomy and astrophysics, advanced computation, and
virtual environments, presented by the University of Illinois. (My "science loving"
nephew, known in the cyberworld as CJGRex
nominated this site.)
EARLweb: Ask A Librarian
Superb resource offered through numerous libraries within the entire UK.
One may ask a factual question on any topic, and receive a quick response
with references from library materials. There also is an archive of
questions that is interesting and fun.
Joanna Land
Any crusades against boredom are ones that I am pleased to
support - and I'm inclined to think that would also be
the viewpoint of those who'd read pages such as my own.
Joanna's site is far from medieval - it's design is
reminiscent of advertisements from the 1950s, and its
amusing content includes how to throw a swank cocktail
party and how to become a more interesting person. Well
worth a visit!
The Witches Realm
This site will be of interest to those who have a love for
literature as well as those who enjoy information about
earth religions. Beautifully designed, Melani's site
has very rich content in both prose and poetry. It contains
over 100 pages, so allow yourself ample time to explore.
Fantasy Realm
This beautifully designed spot will not only satisfy the aesthetic sense but allow you to enjoy "visits" with various
creatures of the fantasy realm. It is a "webspinning" site where
you may obtain wonderful background sets and more. (Of course,
if it is web design that you are looking for, I'd rather you
first stopped here.:)
Management of Psychic Realms
This intriguing, beautifully designed site is presented by Terry Scott, a
professional psychic. He offers various types of readings, and, for
those who are just "browsing", an interesting summary of the traits
of different sun signs.
The Embassy of Xartica - A Celebration of Digital Art
The psychedelic isn't dead, I'm pleased to note - and I'll confess that it never
looked better. Jeff's intriguing art is a striking example of what the
digital age has to offer in talented hands. Top fare.
Canadian Council of Montessori Administrators
Excellent resource for anyone interested in Montessori education.
Bayowolf and Erzsebet's Wiccan Page
Different though their beliefs are from my own, Bayowolf and Erzsebet have
assembled a very thorough site which treats of Wiccan belief and practise.
Muir Woods
Those who love nature will be enchanted by the Muir
Woods, home to the Giant Sequoia Trees. Dr.Horacio Arevalo, a
native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, explains that his
page is "a personal contribution to try to keep natural wonders and resources the way they are, for us and for the next
generations." Both Spanish and English text is presented.
Promocion 92 ENM
The author writes that his page "is dedicated to promote the friendship between human beings. In particular, shows the relationship between old companions of the
Promotion 92 of the Naval Academy in Argentina, which jointly began our studies in 1960. Despite the time passed, we still meet twice a year with our
families, to refresh and enhance our friendship." It is largely
a photo album - and one of the highest quality - nearly
as high as its motive! (There are both Spanish and English
versions of the text.)
Potter Kittiez on Parade
Well, the Potter Kittiez may not fall under the definition
of a class act, but they certainly are original! This
hilarious site (written in heavens knows what language ...
though, if you understand English, you'll be able to
decipher it!) is hosted by cats who have a very offbeat
sense of humour.
Michelle's Magickal Realm
You'll find much original content at Michelle's site, which
treats of her Wiccan beliefs and practises. The variety of
offerings provides for an interesting treatment of an
often misunderstood subject.
David: Alien from The Planet Blizwick
This is not the spot for "sci-fi" lovers! David's essays
are political and social commentaries (from the point of
view of one quite new to earth, of course), and there
are other features that will stimulate thought. Well worth
a visit.
The Irish Tourist Board
This definitely is one of the more attractive and useful
travel sites on the web. Visitors can select areas of
interest, then prepare a personalised travel brochure.
The information is hardly exhaustive, but the concept
is excellent.
Maryland Renfest Withdrawal Syndrome
Renaissance festivals can be as addictive as the Web!
Nothing Sacred
This well-designed site, dedicated to the controversial television
series, contains resources for articles, an illustrated
episode guide, and a media watch section. Though a number
of the resources are links, their assembly shows regular
updates. Definitely better than your average "television
site."
Project Elan
Excellent resource for English students, dividing links to Internet sites according to period and otherwise organising them in a fashion that should encourage research.
Anything 2000's Help Page
Interactive help desk and resources to assist those learning HTML.
The English Zone
Steve Perry, a teacher at Saint Joseph's Secondary School in Cornwall, Ontario, has prepared a site which assists students in research. It is a good starting point for acquainting the young with assembling resources, and with the new treasure of using the Internet to do so. (Ah, what I could have done with that had there been an Internet during my hundred years in school - but I am making up for it today!:)
Game Blasters
Richard Aitken presents nearly 100 2D shooting games for the PC - those enjoying the genre are in for a treat!
