Left Right Out Interview:
On the verge of their Debut E.P., Left Right Out are well on their way to the top. With the whole
scene behind them, they aren't band easily forgotten. I caught up with lead guitarist Kevin Orr to
talk about the band and his newfound knowledge that being in a band can get you
laid.
TA: Terry Appleby
KO: Kevin Orr
TA: How are you today?
KO: Yeah I'm full stressed over this whole launch at the moment, everyone's
coming to me with their
problems so next question please.
TA: You're one of the most
loved and respected bands on the local scene, when and how did Left
Right Out come about?
KO: Yeah if you want that story just read my Bio on the site. Basically I was
the last member to push
them along, and we formed. Played shows and yeah, worked on our stage presence cos' we feel
that's one of the most important parts of making gigs into shows.
TA: How has the band evolved in
your eyes from the beginning?
KO: Well we started as a pretty basic 3-chord band, which may seem weird but now
we have riffs
everywhere. I don't know, each of us all have our different influences and they come out it songs one
way or another. It's really cool how our songs just all seem to fit together. I mean when we practice
we go as nuts if not more than we do on stage, when we play with passion we play
our best i guess.
TA: When coming up with songs
what inspires you?
KO: Me personally I don't really know, I don't think of anything really. I write
riffs to things at a click
of a finger. It just comes naturally to me.
TA: What first possessed you to
pick up a guitar?
KO: Well watching old movies like Young Einstein and all that I thought guitar
was the shit, I always
have. Always wanted to be able to rock out someday and hopefully I can as a
career in the future.
TA: You've just recorded your
Debut E.P., how was the whole recording experience?
KO: It was pretty fun but at the same time daunting. Listening to the same songs
over and over. But
the funny thing about recording I hardly ever know what I'm playing, it just happens that way. We
were going nuts so we took the PS2 and stuff down just for an outlet from music cos' you do get sick
of it and that's the last thing you want, because you know your going to be listening to that record at
least another 300 times.
TA: What's your most memorable
experience during a show?
KO: You cant ask me that cos' i never remember what happens on stage. I'm so out
of it when I play.
People say "oh you remember me? I was up the front waving and wolf whistling". I feel really bad and
say "nah sorry". I never remember, I'm the same with names though.
TA: When did you realize that
playing in a band was the easiest way to get laid?
KO: You get laid if you play in a band now? Fuck I was ripped off.
TA: Did you ever doubt the
band, thinking it would never go anywhere?
KO: We still aren't there so I'll answer when we get there.
TA: What does the future hold
for you, getting laid for playing shows, and the band?
KO: For me personally, I want to become one of those guitarists that you just
think "fuck he's insane",
and I want to inspire other people to do the same, not to be the same. But I'm still waiting to get laid
so hopefully there's a future in that department too.
