This pic shows my rather simple but effective mash tun. Its a 100 litre vessel that was cut back to about 60 litres. I have fitted some metal tap fittings low down (1 inch above the base) and I have also made a circular plastic false bottom with 2 mm holes in (that's the white thing in the vessel !)
On reflection, I'm not entirely sure why I cut it back to 60 litres as its got an aspect ratio at the moment that means its wider (in diameter) than it ever gets vertically. I reckon you could get away with a height of the bed up to 1.5 times the diameter without the mash clogging due to the pressure of grain bearing down. It would have been very useful for those step mashes where you need to add loads more liquor later in the mash.
It is partly for this reason that I fashioned that cunning RIMS set up. As a note . . . the RIMS system works great to get me from the low 30 degC's up to starch conversion but I struggle to effectively mash out with it.
