At the time of the Battle of Antietam, Sharpsburg was a small country hamlet located south of Hagerstown, about 1 1/2 miles east of the Potomac River and Antietam Creek. Established in the early 1760s, it is probably the oldest village in Washington County. The Battle of Antietam did not directly impact on Sharpsburg in the same manner as the Battle of Gettysburg would on the citizens of that town the following summer.
