The 2nd Massachusetts Infantry at Antietam, MD
17 September, 1862

The battle of Antietam was the bloodiest day of the Civil War. Still reeling from its losses at the Battle of Cedar Mountain a month earlier, the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry suffered an ever greater blow as Lt. Col. Wilder Dwight, in so many ways the heart and soul of the regiment, was felled with a mortal wound.
