The world succumbed to the young Jackson 5 and their lead boy singer michael jackson during
the Seventies when their blue-eyed soul attracted mass hysteria previously associated with, say, The
Beatles a decade earlier, and their music sold by the millions. However, every fairytale has a beginning,
and each hit has an equal The Jackson family group was formed in Gary, Indiana and began performing
in the mid- Sixties. The line-up comprised Tito, Jackie, Jermaine, Marion and their little brother Michael.
Prior to joining Motown, the brothers recorded for the Gary-based Steeltown label and gigged in and around
their hometown. They were fortunate enough to support newly- signed Motown group Gladys Knight and the
Pips in concert, who recommended the brothers to Berry Gordy; as did Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers.
In 1969 The Jackson 5 joined Motown where their first public appearance was with Diana Ross and the Supremes
at the Hollywood Palace, and where "I Want You Back" was their debut single late in 1969. This was the
first in a succession of million selling singles that included "ABC", "The Love You Save" and "Never
Can Say Goodbye"; and albums like "Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5", "ABC" and "Third Album". with
the jackson 5 During 1971 The Jackson 5 hosted their own television special "Goin'Back To Indiana"
based around their triumphant return to Gary. The soundtrack's title was "Lookin' Through The Windows"
from their 1972 album of the same name. Both were top twenty hit singles. Michael Jackson broke free
from his brothers to release his first solo album "Got To Be There" in 1972 from which the title track
was the first of several million selling singles. "Rockin' Robin" was another from his debut. Jackie
and Jermaine likewise released solo projects but little Michael predictably, was the runaway success.
"We've Got A Good Thing Going", "People Make The World Go Round" and "In Our Small Way " were favourites
from his "Ben" album, while "With A Child's Heart" represents the best of "Music And Me". Meanwhile,
Jackson 5 hysteria continued in full flow; everything they touched turned to gold, every note they sang
sold platinum. And that unprecedented international success escalated further when the brothers left
Motown in 1975 to join CBS Records using the name The Jacksons. Once again, Michael eventually ploughed
his energies into solo projects and, as they say, the rest is history.
