Popular Art

The diversity and the harmony of the Romanian scenery are reflected artistically and synthesized in the traditional dress, different from region to region. That is reflected in the aspect of the house and of its interior, in the objects of peasant art or in the country songs and dances, in traditional customs.

The embroidered peasant blouses and shirts made of cocoon silk, cotton or linen, the sheepskin waistcoats and wool and hemp fabric are well known in our country. Also the renowned pottery, the wood gates, the fountains, the road side crosses, the icon on wood and glass and all the object of rustic craftsmanship are the expression of high civilization. The ability of peasants' artists was converted into a wonderful skill and noteworthy artistic feeling.

Romanian popular art, delicate, graceful and sober, was piously preserved by the village, which assumed the task to guard its originality, individuality and eternity. It is not easy to describe its beauty. When looking at it a thrill of pleasure makes your soul shiver.

The aspect of the village is in strict harmony with natural environment all over the country. It becomes fascinating when looking at the houses scattered on hills or suspended surprisingly upon the sunny mountain slopes. Here, in a great show of birds' song and the background accompanying buzzing of bees and in the smell of flowers and fresh harvest hay brought in by the breeze from wood's outskirts, you feel like carried away in transcendental spaces. In this atmosphere the visitor is attracted by the multitude of holidays villages with their traditional fiestas originally connected with the moving of flocks and by a lot of pleasant surprises waiting at every turn.

In the plain country villages, nicely aligned, clean and fresh, clustered around the church, the guests will follow straightened roads heading limitlessly across undulating wheat, maize and sunflower crops. The ecstasy of the wide space reigns everywhere, together with wanderlust towards the open infinite. The air is saturated with the fragrance of the plain's plants and the wind stays about towards the horizon's mystery. The thirsty hiker may rest by a well for a draught of fresh, cool water and help himself to honey- sweet water melons.

The village has its own life. Peasants know how to husband the earth, but they also know to enjoy life and while away their dreams flute singing.

Romanian traditions are observed from times immemorial, attesting of a noteworthy, uninterrupted civilization.
