What Mathematics Means to Me
Our family uses mathematics in many
different ways. When we shop we use math to tell us how much money we will
need to pay for our items and how much change we will get back. I use math
to count my savings in my bank. I count the number of people coming to
dinner so I can set the table. My Mom uses numbers to set her alarm clock
and the time on her coffee maker. When we cook a dish the math in the recipe
tells at what temperature to cook it and how long to cook it. When I am
sick we use math to tell us how much medicine to take and how often to
take it. We also used math to measure my room to see if a rug would fit.
I like math because it helps me do many things.

What Mathematics Means to Me
There is not a day that does by that
I do not use Mathematics. I use it to tell time and to help my plan my
day. By learning about decimals and percents, I can decide how to get the
most for my money when I go shopping.
With Mathematics I can teach myself
to build and design something just the way I want to. Now that I know how
to measure, I am turning out to be a pretty good cook. The more I learn
about the favorite sports, the more I want to learn about stats to see
which players are the best. Mathematics helps me compare things by using
tables and charts, and that helps me understand science better. Best of
all, being good at math helps me learn to play games and do puzzles. Everybody
needs to learn Mathematics to get along in this world.

What Mathematics Means to Me
This is how I use math on Fridays.
I use math when I get up in the morning to figure out how long I have to
get dressed and go to school. When I get to school and I unpack my backpack
I use logical reasoning to fit all my books in my desk. Then at lunch I
use addition and subtraction to figure out how much money I give the milk
lady and how much change I get back.
When school is over I use addition
to figure out hoe much homework I have and what books I need to take home.
One hour after school I have basketball. At basketball we use math to figure
out what the score is, how many fouls we have, and how many lay-ups we've
shot. Then when I get back home I figure out what I have for homework and
how many hours I should spend on it over the weekend. When it is bedtime
on Friday night and every other night I use subtraction and division to
figure out how many chapters I should read that night.
