Foxx Finds a Home

When do I get picked?

Ah yes, I remember that day well. We were about seven weeks old and very small. The world was so big! We had been put out into a large glass box for something the petshop person had called "display". I didn't like "display". There were too many strangers grabbing at us, and picking us up. It really scared me! Some of the smaller humans (I know now they are called "children") were mean to us and tossed us around and flipped our noses. Some of the large humans referred to us as "rats" and dropped us heavily back down into the box. My brothers and sisters handled it a little better than I did unfortunately. I began biting these strangers' fingers. There were so many of them! I didn't know there were so many humans in the world! I just kept getting more and more scared.

Then it happened! When I was the only one left, I was still being passed around quite a bit, and that is when I saw them. A group of four humans (two large, one small and one medium) waiting anxiously to see me. I saw the littlest one, a pretty thing with long yellow hair, dancing from foot to foot with her blue eyes as big as the moon. She seemed excited! I heard her ask one of the larger humans, this one with short yellow hair and funny glass circles in front of his eyes, when it would be her turn to hold me. He told her to be patient, it would be her turn soon. The little boy that was holding me was flipping my nose, and begging his human to "buy" me so that he could take me home. I squirmed and squirmed trying to get away from him, but he had a tight hold on me and it began to hurt. I was so relieved when his human said that she didn't want to buy me because I was too mean. So they put me back down into the cage, and the large human with the funny glass things picked me up. He was so gentle, and he smiled at me. He lowered me down to the small human, and I nosed her cheek. She smelled good, like sugar! It made her laugh, and I liked that sound. She petted my head and scratched my chin, and I felt so very happy! Then the two other humans joined us. The large human with long yellow hair took me next. She told me that I was "so cute" and smiled at me too. She tickled my tummy which made me squirm, but I liked it. The medium human petted me, and rubbed my nose and smiled too. These humans sure have alot of teeth! I felt at ease with them, not threatened. I liked them, and I wanted them to "buy" me and take me home. Then they handed me back to the petshop human and said something that I couldn't really hear. I thought they didn't like me, and that I was not going to have a home afterall. I watched as they walked away, then the petshop human took me to the back room and brushed my coat. I could still see those humans wandering through the store... My! Weren't their arms full! They had no room for me anymore.

A few minutes later, I saw them lay all of their things on a kind of table thing with a noisy beeping machine next to it. I saw the human with the funny glass circles hand the petshop person what looked kind of like spinach leafs, and then the petshop person handed him back some more spinach leafs and some shiny little circles. That's when the petshop person who had been brushing me picked me up and walked back into the shop. She took me over to those humans, and to my surprise, she handed me to the large one with the long yellow hair. I looked at the others and they all had armfuls of stuff in bags. So, I guess they did have room for me! She nuzzled my nose and then let me climb into her jacket pocket. I stuck my nose out as I felt the cool wind hit my face when we went outside. I was so excited! I was getting a home!

We took a ride in a black box with windows, and I decided to nap inside the pocket. I was so comfortable and warm! She would reach down every so often and stroke my nose, and I would smile (we do smile, at least on the inside). And I wondered what home would be like.

When the ride was over, I was taken inside a white house with light color carpet and lots of room to run. There were other scents here that I couldn't quite figure out though. Not human smells... something else. Then I saw what was the source of the smell as two furry creatures ran to greet us. One was white with grey and orange patches and the other was all black. They stopped to investigate the newcomer then went about their own business. The white one was big, the black one wasn't much bigger than me. Maybe we could become friends! It would be great to have someone to play with!

My humans then presented me with a collar which held a tiny bell. When I walked it jingled, and it was so annoying at first! I walked around my new home while the humans tinkered with things in another room. The little one with yellow hair followed me around to make sure I was safe, and even bent down to pet me a few times. I explored and explored! Wow, what a grand place! So many new and interesting things! I think I'm going to like it here.

After a while, my humans came and picked me up and showed me to my own little house... it was BIG! And look at all the toys! I remember thinking that this must be what humans call "heaven". I checked out my new living area, and played for a little while. It had been such a long day that I realized that I was tired. I yawned widely (which made my humans laugh), and curled up in my "hammock". I was cozy and happy and I felt loved. What else could I ask for? I was going to like this place called home.
