Millennium ends on a high note for Penang

A 1-2-3 Sweep for Penang at the 1999 National Closed Chess Championship!!!

1999 has been a very satisfying year for the Penang Chess Association. In August, the PCA emerged as the champion at the Merdeka team chess championship in Kuala Lumpur and now, in December, three players from Penang achieved an unprecedented sweep of the national closed chess championship which was also played in Kuala Lumpur.

At the end of the nine-round annual event, Lim Chuin Hoong, Jonathan Chuah and Teng Wei Khoon finished in a three-way tie with equal 7.5 points each. As the rules of the championship allowed for a play-off to decide the title, a double-roundrobin tournament was quickly arranged by the Malaysian Chess Federation. This was won convincingly by Jonathan Chuah who pipped his two friends for the title of national champion. Ng Tze Han and Khor Shihong also put up commendable performances to finish within the Top 10 of the 67-player championship.

Champions yet again!!

It was a nerve-wrecking campaign but in the end, Penang emerged as the winner of the State section of the 18th Merdeka team chess championship.

Penang also finished second in the Youth section of the championship while the CLOFA team from Penang came fourth in the Open section. However, the Penang Girls and the Penang Free School did not win any prizes in their respective sections.

The Merdeka team chess championship was played at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur from 29 to 31 Aug 1999.
