What would I do if I could write the scripts to Dawson's Creek?
May 3, 2000This episode was truly the best episode of Dawson's Creek that I have ever seen, and I have no trouble giving this Rashomon-inspired story 9 Flushes. Before we get to the story, a little on Rashomon. Rashomon is a 1950, Academy Award-winning, Japanese film. The story is about the rape of a woman and the ensuing murder of her husband. The rapist is put on trial at which point the story splits into four different views: that of the rapist/murderer, then the rape victim, then the spirit of the murdered husband, and finally a woodcutter who saw a duel between the rapist and husband which resulted in the husband's death. The film then returns to a narrative tale and ends the story of the threesome. This week's Dawson's Creek most certainly had no rape (and Pacey would definitely not be a rapist), but the show does follow the movie's spirit and splits up the sequences by commercials. The first sequence is a narrative of Joey and Pacey. The two are making out in some shack. They decide that they have to tell Dawson about their relationship. Joey says she has tried but can't. Pacey says that he'll tell Dawson, but he needs the rest of the day to tell him. We next see Pacey by his boat ("True Love") which looks completed. Doug tells Pacey that he has to watch Buzz (the little boy played by Jonathan Lipnicki) for the rest of the day, but Pacey says that he has something to do and asks Doug to watch Buzz. We now have theme song and commercial.Pacey goes to Dawson's house in search of Dawson and learns from Mitch that Dawson is at the library. Pacey goes to the library and finds Andie. He asks Andie if she has seen Dawson, and she says no. Andie then tells Pacey that she has a date with Will this evening. She says that she hopes Pacey is OK with this, and he says that he is. The day passes by, Buzz goes home to his mom, and Pacey talks with his brother Doug. Doug tells Pacey that he'll get hurt in his relationship with Joey, because "at the end of the day, Joey and Dawson are going to stay whatever they are, and you're going to be completely and utterly alone." Nonetheless, Pacey returns to Dawson's house. He is on the threshold of Dawson's doorway when Joey stops Pacey. Joey tells Pacey that he can't tell Dawson about the relationship. He asks why not. She says that she has to do it and that she just tried to, but Pacey points out that Joey has been unable to tell Dawson. Just then Dawson walks out onto his front step and asks what's going on. Pacey tries to say something, but Dawson says that he can tell they were fighting, he just wants to know what they were fighting about. Pacey says he was fighting about "us" (meaning him and Joey) and then says that there is an "us." Dawson looks distressed. Cut to commercial. We now go back in time. Dawson gives Pacey a bottle of champagne to help him unveil the new boat. Joey arrives at the boat. She ask Jen for a ride to the library. Jen says fine. On their way, Joey tells Jen about her problems with Pacey. She tells Jen that Pacey is going to tell Dawson about the relationship. Joey then goes to the library. She is on an upper level of the library and sees Pacey and Andie talking but can't hear what they're saying (they're talking about Will). She only sees their bodies get close to each other and then they half hug good-bye. Andie sees Joey later at the library and tells her that she just saw Pacey. Andie reports that after seeing Pacey all of her old feelings for him came back, but that she nonetheless has date with Will this evening. Joey looks jealous or suspicious. On her way out of the library, Joey bumps into Dawson. He asks her if she wants to watch a movie tonight, but she responds that she is busy. Fast forward to this evening, Joey visits Dawson in the hopes that she'll tell Dawson about her and Pacey. She enters through his window as tradition dictates. Dawson is watching The Last Picture Show. Dawson reminds Joey that they saw this movie on their first date, but Joey tells Dawson: "We never got to see the end [of the movie]. So how does it end?" Dawson tells Joey that the movie is about three best friends. Two of the friends fall in love, but the girl eventually breaks up with one guy and turns to the other. All of them are alone by the end. "That's how the movie ends. Everyone alone. Everyone hating each other. Pretty depressing, actually. I don't know why I'm watching it." Joey all of a sudden says that she shouldn't have come to visit Dawson because she needs to baby-sit tonight. Joey leaves through the window. Dawson all of a sudden hears some noise. We then go back outside and see Joey and Pacey fighting. Dawson walks outside and asks what Pacey and Joey are fighting over. Pacey says that they're fighting over "us." Joey says she's sorry and that Dawson wasn't supposed to find out this way. Dawson says he already knew. Commercial. We again begin the story. Dawson shows up at Pacey's boat and gives Pacey a bottle of champagne. Pacey gives a speech about how important the boat is to him and how he is grateful to all of his friends who helped him build the boat. Pacey then officially unveils the boat and breaks it in by breaking the bottle of champagne over the boat. Later that day Dawson is at the library when he bumps into Will. Will asks Dawson for some advice on first dates. Dawson says that he saw The Last Picture Show with Joey on their first date, but that Will should borrow Dawson's boat and take Andie out for a boat ride. Later that day, Dawson visits Jen. Jen tells Dawson that she is here for him and will listen to him and is so sorry for what has happened to him and that she knew Pacey had to do it. He asks what she means and then he realizes that Pacey was supposed to tell him about something and then realizes that Pacey and Joey are an item. Dawson erupts at Jen for keeping this a secret from him and leaves. Later that night, Dawson is watching The Last Picture Show when Joey comes in. They talk about what I discussed last paragraph, and when Joey leaves, Dawson cries a little. He then heads outside and overhears Joey and Pacey discussing telling Dawson. He eventually interrupts. Pacey says that they were talking about "us." Dawson says that he already knew and that Jen told him. Tensions run high and Dawson says that he has been betrayed by his two best friends. All of a sudden, Andie and Will show up. They ask what is going on, and Dawson tells Andie that Pacey and Joey are together. Pacey says that Dawson is cheapening his relationship with Joey when Dawson says that the relationship is only about sex. Dawson says the relationship has to be about sex, because it can't be about love. These two will never be in love and aren't meant to be in love. Dawson tells Pacey that when Joey and Pacey's relationship ends, Pacey is going to be alone and miserable. Dawson then tells Andie that he is fed up with everything and that Pacey can explain the rest. Dawson enters his house and Joey follows. Commercial. Grams went away for the weekend. She told Jen that Henry is not allowed to enter the house while Grams is away, because one can never trust boys. As a result Jen and Henry are hanging out on Jen's porch. When Jen sees Dawson coming, she knows that Dawson is upset so she sneaks Henry inside the house. We then have the Dawson scene after which point Henry comes out and tries to hook up with Jen because he doesn't know what has just happened. She says that she doesn't want to do this, but he tries to convince her. He tries too hard, and Jen kicks Henry out of her house and dumps his freshman self. We then cut to evening with Andie and Will's date. Will realizes that a boat ride on a first date is too much and that the two should try being friends. They head back to shore and see Dawson. Dawson tells Andie that Pacey should try explaining what has happened. Dawson enters his house and Joey follows, so Pacey is left around Andie and Will. Andie tells Pacey that he is going to be all alone because he will lose both of his best friends. We then enter Joey and Dawson's fight. Joey says she is sorry. Dawson says that a Pacey-Joey relationship will end everything and that he's not going to sit around while Joey fools around and wait to pick up the pieces. "You can't have him [Pacey] as your boyfriend, and me as your consolation prize." Dawson kicks Joey out of his house. Joey walks to the pier and finds Pacey. She explains to him that they cannot stay together. Pacey says that she is going to have to leave him, so she does. The only down side to this episode was the music in the background. A better track could have elevated this episode to great heights, but the director stuck in cheesy music. Nonetheless, I advise you to watch this episode when it reairs this Sunday, May 7 at 8 pm/7pm CST.
QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: Maybe for just once, I wanted to put us before whatever mini drama you and your friends made up this week. --Henry to Jen
AprilApril 26, 2000Parts of this 6 Flush episode were frankly brilliant, but at the same time, parts totally sucked. We'll start with the good. Dawson, Joey, Pacey, Andie, and a guy named Will Krudski go to Dawson's aunt Gwen's house. Will and Pacey have been friends since third grade, but Will moved away from Capeside in third grade. Nonetheless, the two have kept in touch. While at Gwen's house, Pacey, Will, and Andie go and hang out at a local pool hall. Pacey and Will hustle some local pool players. At first Andie disapproves of the guys' action, but she learns to like Will. Will confesses to Andie that he had to visit Pacey this weekend, because Will's dad had been bothering him so much. Andie now realizes that Pacey and Will stayed friends because they both hate their fathers. Andie talks with Pacey and says that it is good that Will and Pacey can talk, because it's bad to keep things bottled up (this advice applies to Pacey's feelings for Joey, see below). Will Andie and Will hook up? Who knows. We may never see Will again.Pacey and Joey have their own romantic chemistry brewing this weekend. Even though Gwen asks Dawson and Joey why they are not together and even though Dawson tells Joey that he wants to get back together with her and even though Dawson and Joey do a lovely karaoke duet to "Daydream Believer," Pacey still wants Joey. When nighttime rolls around, Dawson, Andie, and Will, are all sleeping on the floor. There is a bed which Joey and Pacey are supposed to share (PAJAMA WATCH: Pacey is in a gray, wife-beater and Joey is in a bathrobe). They do not want to, because they will be uncomfortable so close to each other, but they have no alternatives as everyone else is already settled in their positions and sleeping. The next day, Pacey sees Dawson and Joey singing their karaoke. Pacey leaves the room and is disappointed to see his love with another man. Joey comes after him and tells him that he can't be so upset. He says that he has deep feelings for her. She says that when she woke up this morning she felt his arm brush against her, and she liked it. He says, "I'm going to kiss you in about ten second, and if you don't want me to kiss you, then I guess you're just going to have to stop me." They kiss, but Aunt Gwen sees the kiss. She tells Joey that somebody had better to tell Dawson. Joey almost tells Dawson, but can't. Later in the episode, Gwen gives Dawson a picture that she made of Dawson and Joey when they were little. Dawson is supposed to put the picture on his wall in his room (now that he has taken down all of the Spielberg posters). Gwen tells Dawson that he has changed, but that he is essentially the same, that he has to stick with his passion. "Your dreams -- they're an asset, not a weakness." But who really cares about this picture? That night, Joey and Pacey talk. Pacey says that he's not going to kiss Joey again. That she has to kiss him, because she knows how he feels, and she has to decide if she feels the same way. He says that if she had any feelings for him that they wouldn't even need to be having this discussion about who should kiss who. At this point, Joey grabs Pacey by the arm and kisses him. My heart melted. Their kiss was like your two best friends who you know should be together finally getting together. Interspersed through the episode are all sorts of stories that relate to Joey choosing Pacey over Dawson. Gwen tells the story of how she left her husband for another man, because she did not really love her husband. She says, "Isn't it better to have a short time with someone you love then a lifetime with someone who's basically a roommate." But Dawson reflects on what he once had with Joey. He says that in the past he was a dork (earth to Dawson: you are very much still a dork), but that now he should be with Joey. Also this week, Henry and Jen work together at the Leery's restaurant. A waitress hits on Henry, but Jen becomes jealous. Jen says that she has never been jealous before, but she cares so much about Henry that she cannot stand to see him with another woman. Mitch and Gale see an old friend of theirs named Megan. Megan informs the two that her husband recently died. Her husband, Tom, was Mitch's best man. Megan gives Mitch a copy of the toast Tom gave at Mitch and Gale's wedding. Mitch and Gale reflect on their relationship and whether or not they should get back together.
QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: "Growing up doesn't have to equal growing apart." --Dawson to which Joey responds "Somehow it does."
April 19, 2000Rerun.April 12, 2000Rerun.April 5, 2000The WB network did it again..they showed the end of the episode during commercial previews of what was to come on this week's episode. Someone should tell the network not to air anything that happens in the second half of the episode. This 6 Flush episode picks up where the March 1 episode left off...Pacey kissing Joey. The kiss continues and they both participate in it, but when the kiss ends, Joey turns to Pacey and starts hitting him and blaming him for messing up their relationship and for changing their entire harmonious world. Pacey says that the kiss was just a spontaneous and impulsive act. Joey is angry and begins to walk away from Pacey. Pacey says that he at least has to drive Joey home, but she says no. He gets into the car and drives alongside her until she gets in the car. She enters the car but won't talk to Pacey. The next morning Pacey talks with his brother, Doug, about the kiss. Pacey says that just before he kissed her, he saw this look in her eyes: "Do you know how long I've been waiting for her to give me the look?" Doug is proud that Pacey finally acted on his feelings. Pacey says that he does not think Joey wanted the kiss to happen. Doug says that Pacey needs to make sure the relationship is good with Dawson (maybe Pacey can have a one-on-one conversation with Dawson in an old hang-out). Pacey says that he still needs to win Joey's love, but Doug says that Joey would not have reacted so violently if she did not have feelings for him. On the other hand, Bessie and Joey talk over breakfast and decide that Pacey was wrong for kissing Joey. That day in school (although this should really be a Sunday morning considering the fact that Joey went to visit AJ on the weekend and left early), Dawson tells Pacey that some construction company is destroying a camping site that Dawson and Pacey used to hang out at. Pacey says that Dawson and he should go camping there one last time before the building is destroyed. Dawson agrees. That afternoon, Pacey and Buzz (Jonathan Lipnicki) are hanging out. Buzz wants his friends to meet Pacey, but Pacey says that he has plans for the evening. In the meantime, Jen sees Henry at school and discusses his birthday plans. Henry says that he has to go out with his family and Jen cannot come along, but then Jen finds out that Henry is having a party; she gets very angry with him for not being invited. Jen is moping about and Joey is moping around so Andie suggests a girls night out. Dawson and Pacey arrive at the camp ground. Dawson comes to realize that his memory of the camp ground surpasses the reality, but Dawson does not have much time to dwell on this, because Buzz and his friends show up. Apparently, they found out where Pacey was going and plan on spending the evening. Pacey calls their parents and confirms that they can stay. After the kids go to sleep, Pacey and Dawson begin reminiscing. Dawson says that no matter what happens, he has his two friends: Pacey who is his loyal friend and Joey who is his soulmate. Pacey says that he is not loyal, that loyalty is a label Dawson has attributed to him. Dawson disagrees. Girls night out is going well. They go to a roller rink in silly outfits and are enjoying themselves until Jen sees Henry having his birthday party. Jen goes over to say hi and is upset that she was not invited. Henry explains that he was embarrassed of having Jen come to a childish birthday party at a roller rink, especially since Jen already considers Henry a little immature. Jen says that she loves Henry's innocence, and the two are back together. But as the night continues, Jen and Joey talk in private. Jen says she knows something is bothering Joey. Joey does not want to talk with Jen, but realizes that someone needs to help her, so she tells Jen about the kiss. Jen says that she is not surprised and thinks it is good that the two finally got together. Joey is mad that the kiss came out of nowhere, but Jen says "If the kiss came out of nowhere then why am I not surprised." Jen then says that Joey would not be reacting so violently if the kiss meant nothing. The next morning Joey and Pacey bump into each other at a grocery store. They both have something to say. Joey tells Pacey to go first. He says that the kiss was a mistake. She seems shocked to hear him say this but agrees and says that it was wrong and that they should return to being just friends. Whatever! there is so much hurt in both of their eyes as they have this conversation. This is where the discourse ends, but I don't think the relationship is really over. If only Dawson hadn't said anything to Pacey about loyalty. Another story this week involved Jack. Jack's gay friend Ethan came over to spend the weekend. Jack's dad protests this at first, but then it is OK with it. Dad tries to hang out with the guys, but Jack objects. Ethan eventually invites Dad to hang out with them, and Ethan and Dad get along. Jack gets upset that the two are getting along. Jack and Ethan talk, and Ethan says that Dad is trying to get along with Jack. Jack talks to Dad and asks why he wants to be friends now. Dad explains that Jack is a good kid, and Dad should bond with his own son. Yeah.
QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: You, me Dawson, Pacey. We're a real incestuous group. --Jen to Joey on how they have all hooked up with each other.
