Function of The Adrenal Glands

The adrenals lie on the superior and medial aspects of each kidney. As with other endocrine glands the adrenals are abundantly vascularized. The adrenals are two different glands encapsulated as one; the cortex andthe medulla. The medulla consists of secretory and nerve cells. Fibers ofthe greater splenchinic nerve (sympathetic division of the autonomic nervoussystem) stimulate the secretory cells to release epinephrine...the hormonethat elicits the 'fight or flight' syndrome.
