Chapter 5: Chummy?

"I see someone's a little grouchy this morning," Sydney grumbled.

"What happened between you guys?" Lance asked, confused. "Last night you two were chummy and now it's like blah, I don’t like you."

"Chummy?" Sydney asked, laughing. "Since when have you developed an English accent, Mr. Bass?"

"Oh shut up." Lance said, turning his attention back to his newspaper while Sydney munched happily on a piece of toast.

"Well, I'm off for my run." She told him, finishing the rest of her orange juice. "I'll be back in an hour or so."

"Okay, bye." Lance told her, not even looking up.

Justin grunted in dissatisfaction as the basketball hit the rim of Lindsay's basketball hoop and bounced away from it instead of going in. He had only been able to nail two or three shots that morning, which made him extremely grumpy.

"Feelin' frustrated, Timberlake?" He heard a voice ask sarcastically behind him. He turned around to find Sydney stretching a couple of feet behind him.

"No." He lied. "What are you doing?"

"What does it look like I'm doing? I'm stretching. That's what a lot of people do before they run." She said, going back to concentrate on her stretching. He didn't understand her. She didn't care that he was famous, the fact never seemed to enter her mind as she argued with him, and that hurt Justin's pride a little bit. Girls usually threw themselves at his feet, an honor he felt he had earned.

He turned back to the basketball hoop. He heard Sydney's running shoes on the pavement as she began to run. He didn't know why she got to him so much. He was usually too cool, too reserved to let a girl get to him. He'd never really stayed faithful to the girls he'd dated in the past, there had been to many distractions on the road and he wasn't known for his strong willpower when it came to girls. A pang occurred in his chest when he thought of all the broken hearts he'd caused, but drifted away as fast as it had came.

"Justin?" Sydney asked, knocking on his door softly. It was time for dinner, and Lindsay had sent her to go and get him.

"Yeah?" He called from inside.

"Can I come in?"

There was a pause. "Alright." He said a moment later, opening the door. He was wearing boxers and a wifebeater, and Sydney felt her heart beat faster at the sight of him. "What is it?"

"Look," She said apologetically, her face the epitome of friendliness. "I'm sorry we got off on such a bad start. I'm sorry for not turning the music down."

He studied her face for a minute. "I'm sorry for demanding that you turn it down instead of asking. It was pretty rude." He admitted.

"Friends?" She asked hopefully, extending her hand.

"Friends." He said, accepting her hand.

"Okay, in that case, I'll race you to get to the KFC!!" She shouted, bounding down the hallway.

"Woah, cool it kiddos," Lindsay said, smiling as Justin and Sydney burst through the dining room entrance.

"I beat you!" Sydney said, raising her arms in the air triumphantly.

"No fair!" Justin whined, "you cheated!" He said, smiling amusedly at her.

"Whatever." She said jokingly. They took their seats near a confused Lance.

"I take it that the pair of 'someones' earlier have made up?" He asked them.

"Yup." They answered in unison.
