Chapter 6: Be Careful
After dinner, they all went into the living room to watch tv. The guys argued over which movie to watch.
"Let's watch Friends," JC suggested. Lindsay flipped the channel to Friends.
"No, let's watch The Practice!" Lance promptly suggested. Lindsay changed the channel to The Practice. Justin rolled his eyes when Sydney sighed at the sight of Dylan McDermott arguing with a judge.
"He's so cute." She said dreamily. Lindsay murmured her agreement. All of the guys groaned.
"No, let's watch Superman!" Joey demanded. Lindsay switched the channel. He cheered at the sight of the comic superhero.
"No!" Chris yelled, "Drew Carey!" Lindsay switched the channel.
"No way, dude! That show sucks!" Justin exclaimed, studying the television guide. "Let's watch-"
"Why don't you guys just pick a friggin' channel!" Lindsay yelled, feeling frustrated. Everyone was quiet for a moment as they looked at her, but resumed their bickering over what to watch. The doorbell rang and Lindsay got up. "Who could it be now? It's like nine o'clock," She thought aloud.
"Don't worry! I'll get it!" Justin announced, leaping over the couch. Sydney laughed herself into hysterics when he tripped and landed on the floor with a thud.
"That wasn't funny," He pouted, rubbing his behind. He opened the door. The man who stood behind it raised an eyebrow at the sight of Justin. He was dressed in a preppy outfit; a set of khaki pants and a pink polo shirt.
"Is Sydney here?" He asked, hopefully. He still eyed Justin with disdain.
"Maybe. Who are you?"
"Martin Reynolds. And you are..?"
"Justin." Justin told him. "Sydney! Someone here to see you!" He called out, knowing that she didn't want to see this guy. She came up to the door, smiling sweetly. He smirked at her and she ignored his look.
"Hi, Martin!" She greeted him. "What are you doing here?"
"Well," He told her, "I asked your parents where you were at John's wedding, but they said you'd gone to stay with Lindsay. So I just came over to ask if you'd want to go out to dinner with me tomorrow night or something."
Justin felt sorry for Sydney, but he couldn't help but snicker at her helpless look. He knew she wouldn't be able to tell him she couldn't go with him tomorrow because she didn't like him. "Well, Marty-"
"It's Martin." He interrupted.
"Ok, Martin." Justin said, exaggerating his name. "She has plans with me tomorrow night."
"Yeah, I do." Sydney agreed, thanking Justin silently.
"Oh," Martin looked extremely disappointed. "Well maybe some other time then, Syd?" He asked, hopefully, giving her a look of extreme innocence.
"Sure." She said, smiling at him again. He gave Justin a dark look before heading down the porch.
"What exactly are we doing tomorrow night?" Sydney asked him as they headed back to sit with the rest of the group.
"Why, you're taking me out to a movie." He teased. Everyone was silent as they sat down. "So," Justin said, his mood light, "what are we watching?"
"Superman." Everyone said in soft tones, while Joey smiled happily.
"How'd you guys agree?" Sydney asked.
"We didn't, we had to play paper, rock, scissors. Joey won." Chris said glumly.
* * * * *
Sydney walked down the hallway the next morning, feeling revived from the shower she had just taken. She went into the kitchen, finding Lindsay in there alone, looking out the window.
"Morning, sis'." Sydney greeted her, pulling out a carton of orange juice from the refrigerator.
"Hey," Lindsay said, softly. She studied her only sister carefully. "Sydney, is there something going on between you and Justin?"
"Why?" Sydney inquired, still studying the contents of the refrigerator.
"I don't know, it just seems like you two are pretty close."
"I guess." Sydney shrugged, pouring orange juice into a glass. "But that doesn't mean there's something going on between us."
"Just be careful, Syd, please?" Lindsay said, her eyes pleading. Sydney studied her face carefully.
"Why?"
"It's just that, well, Justin's never been known for his faithfulness when it comes to women. Believe me, I've seen him break some hearts before."
"Do you think he's going to break my heart?" Sydney asked, annoyed. "Who says we're even getting involved?"
"No one does," Lindsay amended, "but I just don't want you to be one of those girls." Sydney smiled at her sister, pulling her into a hug.
"Don't worry about me Lindy, I can take care of myself." She told her.
"Aww, is it group hug time?" Chris' loud voice asked. Lindsay and Sydney both laughed as he hugged both of them.
