butterflies of love

"We formed last August, learnt to play guitar, wrote some songs and released an album." Jeffrey Greene, singer and guitarist in Connecticut's greatest export, The Butterflies of Love, isn't joking. In fact what he says is so sincere that it becomes increasingly difficult to gauge whether he's fooling us all, or is genuinely one of these individuals who loves what he is doing so much, that he never ceases to be excited by it. The facts are simple. Jeffrey and Daniel write beautifully fragile songs about love.

angelica

Angelica-world is an informal and serene place, verging on the unconcerned. After playing to Londons pretty young things in the Astoria at a sold out NME show, touring venues such as this tiny Bristol pub may seem a step back in the wrong direction. But, the four members of Angelica give the impression that this is an extended holiday, a perfect excuse to take a break from university and treat whoever bothers to turn up to a slice of their adolescent, fizzy, sometimes disturbing pop.

jj72

In the past, we may have criticised the arbitrary lumping of messianic status upon the shoulders of bewildered young bands in these pages. Listening to vocalist and songwriter Mark's visionary mission statement and seeing his eyes sparkle with ambition, it is hard to believe they only left school last summer.

mika bomb

It's just after nine thirty on Thursday the 8th of March. I'm sat with four members of Mika Bomb - Lead Singer Mika (1), Guitarist Agi, Drummer Ergi, a London boy I'm surprised to find, and Bassist Mika (2). In about two hours they'll go on stage to a rabid Bath audience for the second time in the space of a few months. I'm here to find out what makes them so special and what we can expect to see from Mika Bomb in the near future...

the aislers set

Listening to the Aislers Set second album, "The Last Match" will transport you back to the world of perfect melodies, big arrangements and wistful bubblegum pop sounds that somehow got lost and obscured beneath all the bland, yet perfectly credible guitar groups that have emerged over the last thirty years. The new single "The Red Door" combines the energy of every good punk band with the effortless cool of the Shangri-las - a speedy celebration of sparkly vocals, crunching organs and twinkling guitars, sugar coated and sweet, but with a hard bite that is far from innocent.
