“Music is the most important thing in the world - it’s expression, feeling, everything. A universal language. Everyone gets some kind of music. When you think about the world, the universe and where it all ends, that’s me with music”. One thing Emma Fox, lead singer from Brummie, no nonsense all girl rock starlets, Twist, can be sure of, is that this is what she was meant to do. Twist’s 18 month career so far has been a story of dedication and hard work, culminating in the release of their mini album ‘Magenta’ last month. If ‘Magenta’ is a fast and furious affair encapsulating a spirit that can only be described as frenzied, frantic and tumultuous, then this energy is manifested tenfold in their attitude, their live presence and the mark they have made so far in the rapidly expanding niche that is the All Girl Band.

However as Emma explains, not everything has gone their way - “when you first start you think it’s all to do with your ability to play, but it comes down to where you are and who you know. The fans we’ve got I put down to our own hard work - it’s because we go out and talk to people”. Despite three singles, a Peel Session, some prestigious Fierce Panda gigs in London and extensive touring, the press are only now beginning to pay attention. Emma’s frustration is evident as she expresses her dissatisfaction with the music industry - “We made such an effort to get our arses out of Birmingham and down to London”. Vanessa complains about not having enough time to write songs, “It’s catch 22, as soon as you’ve started writing, gigs are booked and it starts all over again”.

If making themselves heard is proving difficult, then evading the rock chick cliches is an even more onerous task. Twist have made several things clear. They are not Hole, neither do they sound particularly like them. They don’t give a fuck about other girl bands. Emma mocks, “It’s all ‘pink and blue, I love you’ and pigtail hippy shit. The whole point of Twist is we’re girls and we play rock music and we do it just as well, if not better, than some other bands”. They are eager to maintain their rock credentials as guitarist Vanessa (super skinny, ice queen cool) clarifies, “we formed by ourselves, we write our own stuff and we couldn’t go on stage and perform the way we do with so much feeling if we hadn’t had any say in the songs”.

So there you have it. Twist are rock at its rawest and most basic. Intimidating, brash and confrontational, in Vanessa’s words - an “Idlewild-meets-Pixies-meets-Placebo type discordant pop rock loud guitar band”, Twist are girls and musicians and come across on stage as age old veterans, confident and capable. Crowd pleasing is not top priority - ‘Good is Girl’ is introduced with a snarl, “Everyone always says what a nice song this is, but it’s about having oral sex with another woman. Read into that what you like.” Emma threatens that if this all ends tomorrow she will “shave my head, take hormone tablets and change my name to Keith”. But, with an appearance at Reading, a Kerrang gig with My Vitriol and a new album in the pipeline, hopefully Twist will be around for a while longer.
