Depression.
A topic very near, and not-so-dear to my heart.
In a world where this serious disease
is considered a personal weakness, where there are few real definitions of its
symptoms and no one seems to understand, living with depression can be a daily
battle to survive.
Some people live in a world filled
with physical hardship – the poor, the disabled, the sickly, others live with an
unseen battle raging inside, but just as hard to survive.
In one foul sweep, depression can
destroy everything a person held dear – feelings for their loved ones, dreams,
even the will to stay alive.
Friends and family, maybe even
doctors, may say “It’s just the blues… she’ll get over it… just buck up!… come
on – snap out of it!!” But it may not be possible.
I myself have battled depression
since I was in grade five. It has scarred my life, but also made me stronger –
broken bones heal twice as strong, and this horrible disease has twisted my soul
into a ball of steel. I still battle depression, in it’s seemingly
uncontrollable “waves” of sadness, anger, desperation or simply and most
horribly no feelings at all. I plan to win the war.
This section is to help others, both
those with the disease and those who have family members who are dealing with
it, to better understand and fight depression. The battle may take you through
muddy bogs, up jagged hills and through fields of briars, but it can’t beat you
unless you allow it to!!
Best of luck to all – from a soldier
on the frontlines.
