Final Fantasy VII

Final Fantasy VIII

I bought PS one just so I could play this game.  (And you’ll read again in PS2 for FFX.)  Cloud, Aeris, Tifa, Cid, Barret, Red XIII, Yuffie, Vincent, and Cait Sith are your characters.  Materia is your magic and extra abilities.  This was a relatively dark game compared to others in the series, with the secret stories carried all throughout the game.  Beware the anger of Sephiroth.

It took me a few times through to really appreciate this game.  I felt as if Squall had to “find someone” who wasn’t where they should be, then go “find someone else” who also wasn’t where they should be.  With Squall, Rinoa, Quistis, Selphie, Irvine, and Zell, you face the evils of the Sorceress Ultimecia.  The Guardian Force (GF) junction system was excellent.  It just took forever to stock up the right magic.

Final Fantasy IX

Final Fantasy Tactics

Vivi, Zidane, Dagger, Amarant, Freya, Eiko, Steiner, and Quina are your combatants in this game.  I enjoyed the story, but the game was too cutesy at times.  Certain story elements were plain goofy, and the childish character drawings made it difficult to take some things seriously.  Aside from that, the CG graphics are terrific, as are a number of the songs.

A strategy-based RPG with a deep story and great battle system.  I enjoy the vast array of jobs and the challenging story battles.  Great stuff!

Final Fantasy Chronicles

(Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy IV)

Final Fantasy Anthology

(Final Fantasy V and VI)

These are two of my favorites, and I’m so happy I could play them again here.  See my write-up on my SNES page.

FFV was new to me.  It was interesting overall but it didn’t captivate me like most of the other FF games.  FFVI is still my all-time favorite, and I must have played it through a few dozen times by now.  See my info about FFVI on my SNES page.

Final Fantasy Origins

(Final Fantasy I and II)

Dragon Warrior VII

It was lovely to revisit the Light Warriors and take down the Fiends of Elements in this re-drawn version of the original Final Fantasy.  The key story elements are the same, so my NES comments are no different.  FFII was a good play, but did not capture my soul.  I just may not have played it enough!

It was nice to play another DW game after all this time.  I enjoyed the game overall.  I still feel the DWIV is a better game, and I yearn for the day Square-Enix will put together an anthology of the classics on a system I owe (such as PS2).

Chrono Chross

Legend of Dragoon

It was nice to dive back into the Chrono world, though I would have preferred another quest with the original characters.  Still, the variability of this game was great.  Depending on who Serge spoke to when, you might end up with a different set of party members and different ways to get to your destination.  I wasn’t thrilled about all the time with Lynx, though it was an interesting switch in the story.

An interesting RPG.  I enjoyed the story and the characters, overall.  I can’t seem to play the game without Rose.  She’s awesome.  A party without her just isn’t a party.

Parasite Eve

Parasite Eve II

What a great story.  I love it!  Pure sci-fi, and based on a Japanese novel.  I though Aya Brea’s quest was great and challenging.  I particularly love replaying the game with my end-game equipment and simply following through the story and the gruesome animations.  Also, I tuned in to the movie channels and watched the movie version of Parasite Eve.  It was definitely worth a viewing if you can handle the subtitles.

I have to admit, I still have not had the patience to play this one through.  It was a bit of a challenge, but more than that, I didn’t enjoy the feel of it as much as the original.  One day, Aya, I will help you defeat the evil.  I’m just wondering though, was it really necessary for her to lose all of her parasite powers before this game?

Arc the Lad Collection

Lunar 2: Eternal Blue

I enjoyed this set of games.  The first game was remarkably short.  The second game, I felt, had the best music, characters, and story.  The third game with its sole use of the Hunter’s Guild for quest felt a little demeaning.  After all, you couldn’t simply help people; you to register to do it then give a full report.  All in all, a fun experience.

I enjoyed the anime cut-scenes, though the game was a bit too linear for my tastes.  I enjoyed the music CD that came with the game.  But then I lost it.  So I wrote to them asking for a new copy.  They gave me the, “We don’t usually do this, but we’ll make an exception for you…” line, then offered to sell me a copy for $15, plus shipping.  I buy plenty of game soundtracks, but not when they come free with the game!

There’s more to come…
