When did John join?
The exact date Join joined the band is uncertain, but his first gig as part of the band was 2nd July 1971 at Surrey College. Queen's previous gig was February 20th 1971, so he theorhetically he had 4 months to rehearsal with the band. Prior to John joining Queen had at least 3 other bassists and had played 16 gigs. The first being June 27th 1970.

Other bassists were: Mike Grose, Barry Mitchell and Doug Bogie. [ more... ].

Deacon John?
When the first album was released John appeared as Deacon John. As he was new to the group, John didn't protest at what the others thought a more 'exotic' name. By the second album, John asserted himself and was credited appropriately.

Where's John?
John has retired. He wants to spend his retirement with his family. His last official engagement / performance was at the Berjart Ballet (1997) in France.

John's only recent (2002) public comment regarding Queen was about not being happy with the release of We Are The Champions by Robbie Williams.

John does support the We Will Rock You musical (opened May 14 2002) and read and OK'd the drafts (according to Brian). Although he was not at the premiere, he has visited the musical (according to Jacky the fan club - summer 2002) and given it his approval.

John did not appear with Brian and Roger at Queen's induction into the Hall of Fame (see Queen's entry here) in the USA (March 19, 2001) where they played Tie Your Mother Down and We Will Rock You. The presenters of the award were two huge fans and now personal friends of Brian and Roger's - Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters).

John did not appear with Brian and Roger at the Queen Day in Amsterdam 2002 (May 2002) where they played:

  • Radio Ga Ga
  • Tie Your Mother Down
  • Another One Bites The Dust
  • Under Pressure
  • Hammer To Fall
  • Show Must Go On
  • No One But You
  • We Will Rock You
  • We Are The Champions

...with the cast of the We Will Rock You musical.

John did not appear at the Party In The Park 2002 celebrations (3 June 2002) where Brian and Roger performed with the cast of the We Will Rock You musical performed, although John was in the audience with his wife Veronica enjoying the show (as reported by Jacky at the fan club).

John didn't appear with Brian and Roger at Queen's induction into the Walk of Fame in the USA (October 18th 2002).

Did John Sing?
Despite the fact that a few videos show John singing, John maintains that he did not sing on any of the songs because he says he has a terrible voice and can't sing, though admits to singing with a live microphine at the Cowdray Ruins private concert.

The videos were made with him apparently singing for the effect. In some concerts, John can be seen singing into the microphone, but this proves nothing. Perhaps the microphones were not switched on.

Brian states on the Greatest Hits DVD that "John was not a singer".
