Related Bands:
Before Queen were formed (1970) the members (with the exception of John who joined in 1971) were involved with other bands. The most famous and the only one who's commercial output is available is Smile. Smile were Brian, Roger and singer/bass guitarist Tim Stafell (Tim was the at art college with Freddie Bulsara / Mercury and introduced him to Brian and Roger as a friend). For a short while, Smile had a 2 keyboard players; one was called Chris Smith, although he was fired before their Albert Hall gig in 1969 so never played live with them. Smile's other keyboard player was John Harris and even less is known about him.

Smile were formed in 1968 by Brian and Tim. They advertised for a drummer and Roger got the postion. They were signed to Mercury Records (a sign of things to come?) in 1969 and went into the studio recording a number of songs, one of which was the USA only single Earth with Step On Me as the b-side. In 1982 a Japanese LP appeared with 6 Smile songs on. At first Brian and Roger denied it was their Smile, but upon hearing the songs confirmed it was them. Although the LP was released without their consent (Mercury held the copyright) no legal action was taken on their part.

In 1970 Smile were no more. Tim joined a band named Humpy Bong (formed by Robin Gibb of The Bee Gees) and Freddie Bulsara left his band Wreckage to join Brian and Roger and they became Queen, although Brian suggested the name Grand Dance and Roger suggested The Rich Kids.

Freddie changed his name by deed poll to Mercury at this point.

Tim later joined Morgan (see below) with Morgan Fisher (Mott The Hoople) and has also since worked as a model-maker. The alien used for Roger's Fun In Space album cover, was made at the studio where Tim worked, but wasn't aware who it was for! More recently Tim created some of the model trains for the children's TV series Thomas The Tank Engine (narration by Ringo Starr). Tim later joined forces with Morgan Fisher (ex-Mott The Hoople) releasing 2 albums - Nova Solis and The Sleeper Wakes under the name Morgan.

In 1982 the above-mentioned LP Gettin Smile was released in Japan. In 1997 these same songs plus 2 versions of the Eddie Howell song Man From Manhatten (which Freddie and Brian were involved with), was released on a CD entitled Ghost Of A Smile.

Although Brian and Roger didn't own the rights to the recording (Mercury Records did), both releases are legal as Mercury sold the rights to Double Dutch for the initial CD run (limited to 5000) and presumably for the Japanese in the early 1980's.

It's rumoured (2003) Queen have now bought the rights to the Smile songs (hopefully the full master tape and not just the known 6 tracks). It is expected that the forecoming boxed set will contain these tracks - possibly remixed and/or remastered. If they bought the master tapes, there may well be unfinished material to yet see the light of day.

The is another band called Smile based in America, and their website is www.smilemusic.com (down) for anyone who is interested.
