Cool Shades
As far as anyone is aware it is because he thinks it makes him look cool. When asked in interviews he laughs it off. As far as anyone is aware there is no medical reason. It has been suggested that people who use cetain recreational drugs are adversley affected by strong light, but I'm sure this has nothing to do with Roger.

Someone recently claimed his shades were prescription glasses, but I'm not convinced. Apparently he had laser eye surgery recently which might explain why he wears them less these days (2000 onwards).

Finally, here's a link that confirms Roger's eye sight and laser surgery.

Green Hair Day
The story goes that 18th August 1979 at the opean air concert in Saarbruken, hours before a live show Roger was attempting to dye his hair blonde himself, but for some reason it went wrong (he overdid the dye) and it turned out bright green, and Freddie teased Roger all that night. He dyed it blonde the next day.

Roger kicked over his drum kit at the end of the show - what a punk he must have looked.

What type of cars does Roger own?
Apparently he drives an Aston Martin and a Mazda MX5, (2003). He also has a Go Kart track in his back garden.

He had an Alfa Romeo at the time he wrote I'm In Love With My Car (but it was actually written about the Triumph TR4 their roadie Jonathan Harris had and was eventually killed in).

What make of drums does Roger use?

Below are a few snippets, but go here for a very comprehensive list.

Here's an extract from the book "Queen" by Larry Pryce (published in 1976)

"It's a custom built kit, finished in natural wood. Basically the kit is made up of a black matt Ludwig 26" bass drum, a 7.5" x 13" maple snare drum, 16" x 16" and 20" x20" tom-toms, a Meazzi 13" x 13" pedal and a tunable (floating?) tom tom.

All the stands are Ludwig and Shaftesbury - pedals comprise of two Ludwig Speed Kings and the cymbals are an Avedis Zildjian with two 15" high hats, one 16" and one 20" crash and one 22" Zildjian crash, one Paiste 15" crash and two matching Fernula 602 paiste crash.

All this and three cowbells - one large New Era, one small New Era, and one Ludwig. All the fly cases are custom made and he prefers to use Ginger Baker drum-sticks, feeling they wear better, not getting too thin on one end and enabling him to get a good whip on them."

His drum kit at Wembley 86 was:

  • Yamaha Recording Custom kit (birch shells).
  • Snare: 14"x8"
  • Toms: 12"x10",13"x11",14"x12"
  • Fl. Toms: 16"x16",18"x18"

  • All cymbals are Zildjian.
  • Hi-hats: 15"
  • Crashes: 15" or 16" A Zildjian, 16" and 17" Z Custom
  • Ride: it's a crash/ride .. 20" or 22" A Zildjian
  • China: 18", 20" A Zildjian

Crystal states the following.

"Bass drum was 26", snare drum 14", Mounted Tom Toms, 6", 8", 10", 12", 13", 14", 15", 16". Floor Toms 18" & 20". Timbales were 14" & 15" and three Simmonds Electronic Drum Pads.

On some tours we also had a 28" & 30" Ludwig Timpani. These little buggers were copper shells on metal bases. Very expensive and very heavy and awkward to lift and it took four people to get them up on top of the back half of the riser, which was about six foot high.

Cymbals were a mix of Zyldjian and Paiste with 14" high hats, 8" bell, 16" splash, 2 x 18" crash, 22" ride, 22" crash and 24" china. All stands, pedals and hardware were, of course Ludwig made.

And last but not least, my pride and joy, the love of my life, the cause of all my nightmares, the thing I hated most in life, it is of course... the Gong. I cringe just typing that word. Anyway, it was a 60" Paiste Gong."

The kits were mostly Ludwig apart from one Yamaha kit in 1986, the Ludwigs were several balck ones, a Silver Sparkle in 1980 and a Chrome one in 1984, later Roger played a natural maple finish one in the Freddie tribute concert. He has several others at home including a Gretch kit and a DW kit.

Thanks Crystal.

Roger has changed his kit over the years so if you know what he uses other than the above, please let me know.

The Horse Whisperers song / film.
Roger was asked to provide a song for a film. The result was The Horse Whisperers, (which surfaced on Electric Fire in 1998) although it was never used in the film called The Horse Whisperer (with no letter 's' at the end).

Nicholas Evans, The Horse Whisperer, Bantam Press 1995 (annotation on the book sleeve)

In the still mountain of a snow-covered morning in upstate New York, a girl out riding her horse is hit by a 40-ton truck. Though horribly injured, both thirteen-year-old Grace and her horse Pilgrim survive. But the impact of their lives and the lives of those who love them is devastating.

Grace is the only child of a prominent New York magazine editor, Annie Graves, and her lawyer husband Robert. In a way which none of them at first understands, their destiny comes to depend upon Pilgrim's. So mutilated and traumatized is he that even the vet who saved his life now wishes he hadn't. Annie refuses to have him destroyed, sensing that if she does, something in Grace will die too.

She hears about a man in Monatana, a 'whisperer' who is said to have the gift of healing troubled horses. Abandoning her job, Annie sets across the continent like some latter-day pioneer, with Grace and Pilgrim, to find him. The man's name is Tom Booker and he lives in the Rocky Mountain Front, a place of daunting beauty, where the high plains run smack into a hundred-million-year-old wall of limestone. Here, under the massive Montana sky, all thair lives are changed forever. At once an epic love story and a gripping adventure, The Horse Whisperer weaves an extraordinary tale of healing and redemption and marks the debut of a stunning new voice in contemporary fiction.

The book, the film and the song...

Unlike most of the book adaptation movies The Horse Whisperer (1998) perfectly fits the book and entirely represents its profoundity. Robert Redford directed and starred in this valuable adaptation. Although there are some slight plot changes, the book spirit is there, and the psychological curves are masterly rendered. This perfect correspondence between the book and the film is partly because of the director's skill, but partly because of the book's visual wideness. There are some drastic plot changes only at the end of the film.

Roger's lyrics are direct quotations from the book (part two, chapter six). Some of the words are present in the film as well, for example - 'for secrets uttered softly into pricked and troubled years, these men were known as Whisperers'. But other are directly taken from the book - like the stories of John Solomon Rarey and of Sullivan. That's why Roger credits Nicholas Evans as an author, although there are some obvious changes in the lyrics.

The chapter in question tells the story of the so-called whisperers, who had the gift to drive the devils out of the troubled horses' souls. The legends are actually read in the library by Annie, who is desperately seeking a way to cure Pilgrim.

One of the legends she reads about is of the Irishman Sullivan who lived two hundred years ago and who was famous for taming the most furious horses. No one knew how he did that, for he lead the horses into a darkened barn, but acording to Sullivan himself he whispered them the words of an Indian charm, 'bought for the price of the meal from a hungry traveler'.

Another story tells about John Solomon Rarey from Groveport, Ohio, who was so famous of his gift, that in 1858 he was summoned by Queen Victoria to Windsor Castle in England to calm a horse of hers. Before her very eyes 'Rarey put his hands on the animal and laid it down on the ground before him. Then he lay down beside it and rested his head on its hooves.' For that miracle Rarey was paid a hundred dollars. He soon became a legend and the press wanted more sensations. They found the most ferocious horse in all England - a stallion named Cruiser, who was a 'fiend incarnate' and had killed many stableboys despite of his eight-pound iron muzzle. For three hours alone with the stallion Rarey tamed him as well.

Tom Booker, the main character of the book, is a sort of successor of the whisperers, who has the natural gift to communicate with horses and take their fear away. That is the reason that makes Annie take her daughter and the wounded Pilgrim to Booker. But along with the horse's soul the power of this man and the power of love resurrects Annie's and Grace's souls as well.

Who are The Cross?
The Cross were a band formed by Roger in 1987 when it became apparent that Queen would not tour again. Roger wanted to tour so set up another band where he was the singer and guitarist.

The Cross released 3 albums (Shove It, Mad Bad & Dangerous and Blue Rock) before disbanding approximately 1993 - actually I'm not too sure of the official break up date so if anyone can confirm it more acurratley, then please email me.

Cross Discography (not at this site).
