Fantasy Authors

I have never been a big fan of fantasy - that's what my brother and husband read. But there are a few authors that I must admit to reading. For the most part, though, this is "soft" fantasy. You can either browse the page or choose the author you want from the list below:
Eddings, David
Michaels, Barbara
Miller, Linda Lael
Rowling, J.K.

David Eddings

I adore David Eddings - at least these two series! They've got great characters, some hilarious moments and great plots.

The Belgariad

Garion, Ce'Nedra, Polgara, Belgarath and all the rest will work their way right into your heart. The characters of the Belgariad are very close to my heart. These are books for the entire family - Ray and I read them to each other on long car drives since they are not, alas, on audio tapes. These are really two related series, but I just put them together because in my mind they are inseparable.

Belgarath The Sorcerer
Polgara the Sorceress
Pawn of Prophecy
Queen of Sorcery
Magician's Gambit
Castle of Wizardry
Enchanters' End Game
Guardians of The West
King of The Murgos
Demon Lord of Karandas
Sorceress of Darshiva
The Seeress of Kell
The Rivan Codex

The Elenium

I don't think this series is as riveting, but it is a much more involved plot - deeper and more adult so fantasy fans will probably enjoy it more. And I must admit that Aphrael is a great character as is Sparhawk and Ehlana.

The Diamond Throne
The Ruby Knight
The Sapphire Rose
The Tamuli
Domes of Fire
The Shining Ones
The Hidden City

Upcoming Releases

I know he has a new series out, but I am not currently reading it.

There is no website for these authors that I know of, but you can access a complete booklist through any bookstore, such as Amazon.

Barbara Michaels

Barbara Michaels isn't fantasy in the same way that Eddings or Rowling is. The books are more ghost stories. While a few are almost traditional ghost stories, they really do take a variety of forms of this theme. Barbara Michaels is one of the pseudomyns of Elizabeth Peters, who is also on my Mystery page. Peters isn't writing under this name anymore - at least there hasn't been a new title in longer than I can remember! These are gripping plots that I don't recommend reading before bedtime (at least I can't do it!).

McDougal Series

These three books share the same characters. The characters are full of interesting issues and the plots are definitely hair-raising! There is even a little romance.

Ammie Come Home
Shattered Silk
Stitches in Time

Linda Lael Miller

Miller normally writes very traditional historical romances (you know the stuff – so sweet it makes your teeth ache…and yes, I’ve read some of them, so I can have an opinion), but she has one series on vampires. Now while it certainly has certain aspects of a romance novel (you know what I mean….), it really is more of a suspense fantasy. These are the only four books by Miller I happen to own because for whatever reason, I really enjoyed them. They combine historical fiction, romance and fantasy into one series. Since I don't read any of her others books, I don't keep on her upcoming release so you'll have to do your own research if you want to know those.

Vampire Series

Forever and the Night
For All Eternity
Time Without End
Tonight and Always

J.K. Rowling

Like the rest of the world, I got hooked by Harry Potter. When the first movie came out, I decided that I would read the book first...and have been addicted ever since. Oh, well, could be worse things to like! In any case, Harry Potter just offers fun reading.

Harry Potter

The books start out pretty juvenile, but as Harry grows up, so do the books.

Harry Potter and Sorcerer's Stone
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Harry Potter and the Ghostly Hallows
