RPG's

Welcome to the one of the most important sections on the whole site, The Rules section. Now, we're a pretty laid back group for the most part, and we always like seeing new ideas from members or anyone for that matter, but for the RPG, we've gotta have a few guidelines placed down for both the RPing itself, and for Character creation. After you've read this section, you're more then welcome(Actually, you're encouraged) to create a character in our Join section.
For all you people that don't want to sit on the page and read the entire rules, the rules are available here in .doc format for Windows.

1. How it all Works

Lemme say a few words on how this RPG works quickly.
When you submit a character in with Daes Dae'mar, and it's approved, you're added to the official mailing list for the club. The Mailing List(run on
eGroups.com) is where the club will be doing nearly ALL of the Role Playing for the club. You'll recieve a brief e-mail from eGroups after you've been added by an Officer in which point you're more then welcome to start Role Playing with the rest of the club, or you can request for a Mentor to help you get used to our unique style of Role Playing. It's all up to you in this case.

2. Creating a Storyline/Posting

As I stated above, we Role Play over a Mailing List, so posting in this sorta format may be a little foreign to new members. Here's how it works.
First, we have 3 forms of Posting for the Mailing List. Open Ended, Co-Posts, and Unique Posts. Each type of Post below will be described here.
Open Ended Posting is the most common type of post on Daes Dae'mar by far. The Open Ended post is created when the player writes the beginning of a storyline, and leaves it open for any other character in the area to jump in, and continue the story on. Simple. Just remember to watch where the storyline is taking place. A Novice in the White Tower can't be involved in a storyline in the Aiel Waste.
Co-Posts are a slightly modified verison of an Open Ended post. Co-posting is when 2 or more people plan out to Role Play certain characters together between themselves only. The posting is the same as before, only the storyline is not open for new people to enter unless they ask the original posters ahead of time.
Unique Posts are best described as being, well, unique. Unique posts are uncommon on the Mailing List, and are usually only used to further storylines or Events(described below) along. They are normally 1 time posts, and are not to be responded to, or even created by any member without permission by an Officer beforehand.
Now that you have a basic understandment of each type of post, we'll get on to showing you how to actually to write a Post, and send it over the Mailing List.
First off, when creating a new post/storyline, be sure to have a proper title for the thread. The title of course goes on in the title space for all E-Mails, and it should be something related to the story. For example, if the storyline is about an Aes Sedai teaching a class of Novices, the title could be "School Time". All new threads should have a unique title. You don't need to change the title when responding to an Open Ended, or Co-Post though, simply respond to the e-mail.
Going on to the body of the Post, we ask that ALL posts have a unique header before the actual content of the post. The Header will have a brief info of Where this is taking place(Location), Who's involved(Characters), What's taking place(Description), and What type of Post it is(Type). It sounds more complicated then it is. See the example on the Bottom for help.

Type: Open Ended
Location: Black Tower; Training Yard
Characters: Asha'man Alfin Karr
Description: Alfin, bored, decides to train with his sword.<./p>

Something along those lines should be at the head of All Posts. As a new character joins in, he or she should be added to Character section, and as the story moves, a new, very brief(No more then a sentence or 2) Description should be added. This may sound like a bit of a hassel to do, but it helps keep threads organized, and allows new members to enter storylines and not be as lost
Lastly, to actually send your Post(s), you merely have to send the e-mail to DaesDaemar@eGroups.com And it will be sent over the entire Mailing List shortly after. For responding to a post already on the Mailing List, simply respond to the Post like any other normal E-Mail. It's quite simple.

3. Events

An Event is a unique experience which can occur at anytime on Daes Dae'mar and affect any, or all of your characters. An Event could be anything from a Wide Scale Event, such as an invasion by the Seanchan, to a more Personal, or Small Scale Event; Such as a Novice being raised to Accepted.
As stated earlier, most Events are random, and can occur anywhere in the world, to anyone. You should always be prepared for the unpredictable. Yet, certain Small Scale Events are available to characters at certain times. Some will be described further down this page.

4. Writing Requirements

Within joining Daes Dae'mar, it is expected of you to at least participate to a certain extent every month. We realize that people are busy, and trust us, we know, and respect that but when you make the commitment of joining Daes Dae'mar, we'd appreciate if you added to the club as much as possible. It is asked that you write or participate in at least 2 Posts a month. That's not a lot to ask, so we don't expect it to be a problem.
Now if you fail to meet this for the first few months without a reason, we'll simply just e-mail you occasionally to see if there's any problems. If it's a repeat problem, we'll take away your character, and leave him or her up for adoption for another player. This is an extreme case, and we doubt this will come about, but it's still a fair warning. And let it be known that, this will be enforced now as of January 25th, 2001.
If there's any reason you know ahead of time you won't be able to post as well, please don't hesitate to contact one of the Officers so we won't leave you annoying e-mails while your gone. Remember, we're a relaxed, easy going group of people. Just ask if there's a problem with meeting the Writing Requirements, we'll generally understand.

5. Playable Positions

A playable character can start out as a simple adventurer, to a soldier under the Dragon Reborn, to a Novice in the White Tower. You may play nearly any sort of character in Daes Dae'mar. Though we do have limitations. Off limits areas are the Land of Madmen, Finnland, Shadowspawn, WoT established characters(Rand, Mat, Egwene, etc), and anyone with Min's ability. Wolfbrothers ARE playable, but they're rare, and considering we've met only 2 in the WoT so far, don't expect to have them approved often. When such a character slot is available, it'll be posted over both the Mailing List, and on the OOC Boards and it'll be first come, first serve. Otherwise, you are welcome to play anywhere else. Below, is an example of how a character sheet should look for a submitted character.

Real Name:
E-mail Address:

Character Name: - Character names must protain to the Wheel of Time. We'll generally accept most, but keep it to the subject.
Age: - Reasonable age for profession.
Gender:
Birthplace:
Current Residence: - ie: He's a Solider under the Dragon Reborn, and is stationed in Cairhein.
Position/Profession: - Players may NOT start out in high positions of power or authority. They have the chance to eventually reach such goals, but not intially.
Physical Description: - Be realistic, no one's perfect.
Personality Description: - Once again, be realistic and also please be indepth. Tell us his or her's pros and cons.
Possessions: - As in clothing, a sword, etc He/She shouldn't be caring around any rare or unique items this early in the game unless approved beforehand/
Skills: - Skills are listed below.
Special(if any): - Asking for something special(ie: Darkfriend).
Notes: - Anything else you want to add or say about your character that you haven't already covered.

A few Quick things about Characters.
1. Please write your character from someone else's point a view, not theirs. This information will be posted on the website, so also be sure to note certain things you *don't* want other players seeing(Darkfriend, etc).
Another thing is DO NOT ASK FOR OVERLY POWERFUL ITEMS AND/OR POWERS. They will NOT be accepted 99.9% of the time. No Harpoon Guns, No Magical swords that keeps you safe from the One Power, etc. It's not going to happen, so don't ask.
Lastly is you're more then welcome to have more then one character. As long as you keep your characters all active, and up to date, there shouldn't be a problem.

6. Skills

All people are good at something. Your characters are no different. Your character may be an excellent scouter, or possibly is good a weaving or sewing. Nothing extreme will be accepted(ie: Blademaster) so don't ask, but we feel that Skills will help flesh out your character so to speak, and make them unique to other characters.
The One Power is a unique thing to Skills. As you know channelers tend to be good at certain aspects of using the One Power, such as healing, and those will be accepted as Skills for channelers. Full fledged channelers, such as Aes Sedai or Asha'man, also tend to be better at certain threads of the One Power(fire, water, wind, earth, spirit) and the potential chance of an Aes Sedai or Asha'man being particularly good in a thread uncommon to their side of the One Power is possible, but it'll be considered as a Major Skill which is explained in the next paragraph.
A character starts by have 2 skills, 1 Major and 1 Minor, and can eventually gain new skills through their adventures throughout the world.(ie: A Soldier may pickup a few Dancing skills from a local maiden while resting at an inn for a good period of time.) Always ask though before requesting new skills. A Major Skill is obviously something that could be to an immediate help of a character, while a minor is of lesser value. There is no exception to this rule. A few examples of Major, and Minor Skills are listed below to help give you an idea of what to look for.
Swordsmanship(Major) Singing(Minor) Dancing(Minor) Knowledge(Major; Minor) Archery(Major; Minor)

Of course, these are only examples. You are welcome, and encouraged to create your own Skills and submit them.

7. The One Power

Players are allowed to create, and play characters with the One Power, on both sides. The True Power is NOT an ability available to any players at this time.
Full Fledged Aes Sedai & Asha'man are accepted at this time in limited amounts, but remember, the Towers need Accepted, Dedicated, Novices and Soldiers as well, so don't be surprised to have an experience channeler turned down. Wilders are also accepted, but should have a block(ie: Nynaeve's problem).
As for the actual use of the One Power, small weaves are allowed to be used in storylines without permission of an Officer, but using the One Power to create greater weaves(ie: Travelling), you must first have the Power Rank(described below) to accomplish the goal, and second have direct approval of an Officer before doing so. Don't hesitate to ask though, most things, if possible, will be accepted.
I mentioned above about Power Ranks, which are another unique feature to Daes Dae'mar, and I'll try to shed a little more light on the subject.
A Power Ranking is added to All characters with the ability to channel. From the youngest Novice, to the wisest Aes Sedai they all have a unique Power Ranking from 1-150 that is assigned to them from an Officer. The Power Ranking helps give the player an idea of their characters exact strength with the One Power, and how much they can actually do. It's uncommon that any character will get a rather high Power Ranking due to the fact that in Wheel of Time, many channelers just aren't as strong as they were in the past. If you recieve a low Ranking, it's not meant as a personal insult, it's just that character is limited in their use of the One Power, like most channelers in the current age.
It is possible to have a Power Ranking increase as you continue Role Playing, but it would rarely be by much, and normally a Small Scale Event would have to occur for such a thing(Being raised from Novice to Accepted is a perfect example).
On a final Note about the Towers; Novices, Accepted, Dedicated and Soldiers are all eligible to be raised to the next step after a certain length of time, and after a certain amount of requirements are met. Below is the list of Requirements.

Novice & Soldiers - Minimum of 3 Months of being an active member of Daes Dae'mar, and over 25 compiled posts during that time. Ask for approval, if accepted, a Unique post must be created about their experience of being Tested.

Accepted & Dedicated - Minimum of 6 Months of being an active member of Daes Dae'mar, and over 60 compiled posts during that time. Ask for approval, if accepted, a Unique post must be created about the experience of being raised.

9. Darkfriends

Yes, they are most certainly playable, but, you must remember, being a Darkfriend, you are normally in hiding, which means you don't reveal yourself to anyone unless necessary. All characters that are allied to the dark will be left hidden to all but the Officers and the player him/herself.
To play a Darkfriend, you must ask permission first, and a Darkfriend can be any other position in the game(Soldier, Asha'man, Aes Sedai, Aiel, etc) and will do their best to work in the interests of the Dark One.
No other Darkfriend will intially know if others are Darkfriends, though their will be special meetings among Darkfriends to help further ambitions of The Great Lord of the Dark, but all such people will meet under aliases(ie: Bors). You'll understand if you're a Darkfriend. *winks*
In anycase, this leaves a lot to RP with, and also leaves an great element of fun for everyone since all players will have no choice but to be paranoid since your best friend could very well be a Darkfriend.

10. Tel'aran'rhiod

Tel'aran'rhiod is available, but can only be used to further storylines. It's not available to travel in, and it can not be used enter on a regular basis. A character could simply slip into TAR by accident in their sleep. Till further notice,. it can not be used for any other reason.

11. Battle System/Duels

The Battle System for Daes Dae'mar is limited due to the fact we limited conflicts. Most wars, and large battles will be fought behind the scenes(Little actual description of one on one battles between hordes of Trollocs and no-name Soldiers, etc), but Duels are allowed.
A Duel must be accepted by both sides, and approved by an Officer beforehand. Normal Duels aren't usually to the death, but can be requested. If that's the case, the loser of the duel is gone for good. So choose wisely.
The Actual system of how the duel works is the Officer will deem a fair amount of HP(Hit Points) to each combatant. After that, each person will have a turn where the Officer will roll a 20 sided die to see if you hit, and where the damage is inflicted. After that, 1 to 4, 6-sided die will be rolled(depending on what weapon is being used, or in the case of the One Power, level of the characters Power Ranking) to see the level of damage done to that part of the body. In a regular duel, the first individual to go below 10 or more HP, has lost the Duel.
Below is the stat sheet for what means what, when the 20 sided die is rolled.

1-5 - Missed.
6-9 - Connected on the Leg
10-12 - Connected on the Arm
13-17 - Connected on the Upper Torso
18-19 - Connected on the Head
20 - Connected on the Throat

If 16 or more damage is done in one hit to the Throat area, the Duel is automatically over, and in cases of a Duel being to the Death, the hit is Critical, and will kill the opponent.
Know that also a Duel is considered a Small Scale Event, but will be treated slightly different as the actual Duel will take place in a Live Chat, logged, and then placed in the History section of the Daes Dae'mar Website. It's recommanded that after a Duel is completed that the players may want to write a follow up.
