EarthCulture and other members of the Rainforest Wood Coalition have revamped the call for a boycott on all unsustainable rainforest woods. This boycott includes mahogany, teak, redwood, douglas fir, lauan, meranti, western red cedar, rosewood, ebony, & ramin to name a few. We are targeting the furniture and construction industries primarily. Mahogany, lauan, teak, and other rainforest logging threaten the rainforests' 50 million indigenous peoples, along with endangering over 50% of the world's plant & animal species.
Commercial logging is the leading factor in rainforest destruction, both through extraction & road building.
Many alternatives to tropical hardwoods (not to mention wood products in general) exist. There are sustainable domestic maple, cherry, ash, and oak operations which can be stained to look like mahogany or teak. The demand for reused lumber is sky-rocketting. This wood comes from old barns, houses, and factories, and can be used in furniture, construction, picture frames, and the like. Agricultural waste fibers and recycled fiber can & are being used in paper. Building with straw bales, adobe, cob, recycled steel, or rammed earth offer tree-free solutions for contruction. The list goes on.
