DESCRIPTION 
Medium size parrot finch, 12 to 13 cm total length. Sexes are similar.
 Adult male has a deep red head and throat. The back is bright green 
as are the wings. The upper-tail coverts are red fading somewhat to the
 end of the tail. The beak is black. The hen is similar but the colours
 are slightly duller, in particular the red of the face. 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Restricted but widespread and reasonably common in its range. Found in 
forest clearings and edges. Also among shrub vegetation and edges of 
cultivation. Occasionally seen in gardens. Seen in pairs or small flocks.
 
BEHAVIOUR 
Active and easily spotted because of its distinctive markings. Loves to bathe. 
DIET 
Feeds in growing vegetation and on the ground. Diet consists mostly of the seeds 
of herbaceous plants and grasses. Also takes some insects, including termites 
and grasshoppers.
